First Aid Suggestions for a week away at the Cottage

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2006: First Aid Suggestions for a week away at the Cottage
By Heaventree on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 09:48 am:

We are going away next week to a cottage that will be at least 30 mins away from a small town. I am assuming that things like pharmacies and grocery stores will not be open late like they are in larger centres.

Aside from the obvious stuff like Tylenol, bug spray and sunscreen what should I bring from a first aid perspective? I have a 2 year old and a 10 month old.

TIA

Just in case, I would take a bottle of Ipecac and be sure to have the phone numbers for poison control. You are in an environment where you don't have total control, and heaven knows.

I'd take some icepaks, some sort of soothing lotion in case someone does get a sunburn, cortisone ointment in case someone touches something that raises a rash, antibiotic ointment & bandaids, a tummy soother.

By Kaye on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 09:58 am:

Ipecac is no longer recommended for home use. Skip that :)

In my gs first aide kit we have, tylenol, a "sting stick", benedryl, calamine lotion and some aloe. Bring some bandaids and some ziplocks (for icepacks) and you should be good to go.

I also always pack some packing tape, I use it to child proof, tape over outlets, tape up curtain ties, tape closed cabinets if need be.

I always travel with a complete first aid kit.
*some* of the items inside are:
Cold medicine
Pain relief (Tylonal/etc)
Pepto Bismal
Bandages/neosporin
cold/hot pack
After bite stick
Dental repair kit
Extra contacts for hubby
Vinegar (for ocean stings)
Burn cream
Motion sickness pills
Aloe
Etc---you name it I likely have it in my kit.

Yvonne, you sound just like me! LOL! I get teased all the time, but I'm always prepared!

Don't forget fingernail clippers in case of a hangnail, or tweezers to pull out a thorn, briar, or splinter...

And I always carry benedryl gel or cream, and the kind you take in case of a reaction.

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 11:16 am:

YEP--I have a complete manicure set (with clippers, etc) and I have both the Benedryl cream, lotion and pills (my son has a lot of allergic reactions).
I used to get teased--- but since those who made fun of me have needed to use my kit, the teasing has stopped :)

I just bought a GREAT first aid kit at Walmart to keep in my car. It's in a large plastic container, made by Johnson & J ohnson, and it was $10. It has pain relievers, diahrrea meds, tons of various sized band-aids and sterile pads, cold packs, bug spray, itch ointment. It's great.

Ditto on the manicure set, burn cream, and
EXTRA CAMERA BATTERIES!! :) (That's right up there with first aid for me!)

By Heaventree on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 01:56 pm:

Thanks Ladies,

Yes Deanna, I'm just like you at least 100 photos a month. :) Costco loves me.

I'll go to Walmart tonight, I hope they have that here. I went to the pharmacy today and just spent $50 and all I got was Lactaid (for me), Benadryll for adults and children, some Advil for adults and some After Bite.

The first aide kits were pricey, they had one for $31 and one for $54 and they were mostly bandages, no stuff in like pain relievers and such.

By Dandjmom on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 02:07 pm:

Gauze for needed covering, and ditto the tweezers, band-aid makes a antiseptic wash that came in my first aid kit.

I know that you can get a good first- aid kit from walmart fully stocked with the essentials, I think it would cost less then buying everything individually, unless you already have these things around the house.

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 02:24 pm:

First Aid kits have more bandages and less medicine. If you are caught away from a pharmacy, you will likely need medicine.

By Kaye on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 04:15 pm:

yep yvonne, I bought a first aide kit (in a zipping bag) and then I add meds to it. We have to have my GS moms sign off on all meds, so I even have a list in it and I circle if I give out the last dose, or close.

By Reds9298 on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 04:43 pm:

This one had several different meds in it, which is one reason I bought it. It's a larger plastic "suitcase" type deal, and there's room for you to add anything you might want to it's all in one place.

By Tripletmom on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 10:11 pm:

Reds-I also have the 1st Aid Kit with the meds.Make sure you check and replace meds when they expire.Nothing worse than having expired pain meds.

WHEN I WENT TO DINSEY A FEW YEARS BACK , I GOT A JOHNSON AND JOHNSON FIRST AID KIT (120+) KIT FORM TARGET ON SALE FOR ABOUT 34.99 , AND I HAVE TYLENOL NEOSPORIN, IDIONE AND OTHER MEDICANES CAME IN THE KIT, EVEN THE FULL SIZE (8OZ) BOTTLE OF THE BAND-AID ANTISPECTIC WASH CAME IN THERE, YES THERE WHERE A LOT OF BANADAGES BUT OTHER STUFF THAT WAS SUFFICIANT AS WELL. BUT YOU WILL ALWAYS ADD MORE, WE ARE WOMEN THATS JSUT HWAT WE DO.

By Dandjmom on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 09:53 am:

Oopsss, sorry ladies , please don't misunderstand my caps. I'm currently working on a project that require caps, and before I started typing my response I forgot to take them off. so I apologize for the capital letters.

By Heaventree on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 10:34 am:

I bought the J&J kit with 100 pieces, it was just over $16 here, it only had some Tylenol in it though no other meds and I bought a ton of other stuff as well. I also printed off CPR instructions for children, adults, babies, cats and dogs along with first aid instructions for common things like fractures, burns, poisoning, bites etc.

I have stuff for the itchies, benadryl for adults and kids, lactaid, alcohol, steriod cream, diaper cream, cream for poison ivy, nail clippers, sunscreen, advil, tylenol, hand cleaner, cough candies, after bite, pedialyte, tums, allegry meds, reflux meds.

Wow, I can't believe how much stuff I have to bring for one week, I have to pack 70 diapers as they are both still in diapers and we go through 5 each a day.

Phew, I think I'm ready. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Oh and Kaye you are right Ipecac is no longer recommended, I check the Mayo Clinic site.

If no one has said it yet! Antihistamine's and something for Spider bites! My daughter was bit by a spider this week and man oh man did she react. Her poor leg is super red and poofy and itchy. Well her left upper leg anyway right around the bite. We don't know what kind of spider, but we're treating the symptoms. It went from about the size of a quarter to 2" by 3" overnight! :(

By Reds9298 on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 01:11 pm:

You didn't have to BUY all fo that did you? Didn't you have most of it at home already anyway?

By Dandjmom on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 02:45 pm:

Well you sound like your covered, yeah I know the diapers, the amount I had to take just for my son for a week was amazing.

Well have fun, enjoy and take as many pictures as you can.
