Question About "Little Swimmers"

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2006: Question About "Little Swimmers"
By Hol on Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 02:46 am:

I had never heard of these until the birth of my grandaughter. I guess they are a special type of disposable diaper, so that toddlers that aren't potty trained can go swimming?
My DD and GD are real "water rats". They have several friends who have pools, and go almost everyday that DD has off from work.
My question is: how leakproof can these things be? They get wet, so how absorbent can they be?
In the "cloth diaper days", I never took my kids in anyone's pool even with plastic pants over the diaper. I was afriad that it wasn't very considerate to the pool owner, or the other users of the pool. The only place that I'd let them wade in was the ocean.
I know that at public pools, they have signs stating that if you have an open sore or active sore throat or ear infection, that you not use the pool. Chlorine can only kill so much. So what about possible fecal matter in the pool? Please enlighten me. Thanks.

They do not absorb pee. Just poo. They're usually accepted everywhere.

I think Heidi meant to say pool not "poo". We use little swimmers they are allot easier than a diaper because they do nto get huge and explode like a diaper would. They are good for swimming in a pool cause the kid can get around allot easier. We love them and use them in others pools.

We used them also before Natalie was potty trained. Much better than regular diapers and easy to off, too! Natalie never pooped in one so I have no idea!

The only place I know that will not accept them is a cruise ship. Other than that we never had any problem with using them.

Just a word of warning they do leak! We were surprised a few times. I would get Matthew dressed for swimming before we left for the pool to save time and ended up with wet mess.

I think they serve two purposes, one they don't get as heavy and saggy as a regular diaper because they are not as absorbent and two they keep the *messies* contained. If you do end up with a dirty diaper don't try to pull them off, just tear the sides, much easier to clean up.

I have 2 bigger kids with special needs, who will always be in diapers. We use Gabby's. They're cloth diapers with a special covering. While nothing will stop pee from going into the pool, these save the day if there's a BM issue. They're the only diapers that a lot of public pools will accept for people who are incontinent.

I never had a problem with them, they always kept any messes inside. They're great!!

By Sandysmom on Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 11:53 am:

I know they are supposed to keep the messes inside but I still wait until after little dd has her BM. I do like them, but I worry about that one time when I may have to go after a loose t**d.

I read somewhere that they do leak. Our swimming pools locally do not allow them. We personally do not allow them in our pool. The thought of swimming around with that grosses me out. Most kiddy pools are drained a lot to prevent that issue.

A lot of pools will not let kids in with diapers or Little Swimmers. I know where my parents live in Florida, at their complex babies who are in diapers or Little Swimmers are not allowed in their pool. On cruise ships, its the same way.
We have a large above ground swimming pool. We allow Faith in our pool with her Little Swimmer on. So far, we have had no poop accidents while shes been in there with us. Hopefully by next yr this time she will be potty trained so need to for them anymore.

Personally, I'd worry more about recently "potty-trained" little ones in a public pool rather than worrying about the ones in little swimmers, lol! ;) Or very big, very hairy men who may not practice the best hygeine, KWIM?? LOL! I think little swimmers are pretty safe, and feel fine about swimming in chlorinated water with little ones wearing them....

By Hol on Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 03:48 pm:

Wendy - EEEWWWWWW!! I never thought of that!!! (the men) :) I don't think I'll ever go in a public pool again! LOL!

By Mrsheidi on Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 08:01 pm:

Tonya, I wrote what I meant. They do not absorb pee. They do catch the poo! Connor's pool where he takes swim lessons does not accept them and they ask that we use plastic swim diapers. Our athletic club is ok with the disposable kind. But, most public pools accept them.

Did anyone else thing that this post was going to be about sperm motility?? LOL :)

By Tink on Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 08:19 pm:

I'll fess up, Pam! I definitely thought "Little Swimmers" was a euphemism for sperm! I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one.:)

By Hol on Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 09:21 pm:

Pam and Tink - Those days are behind me! :) If I got pregnant, I'd be in "The Enquirer". LOL!

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 09:59 pm:

I keep thinking about sperm, too, and have to remind myself, that it's about swim diapers!
