Rain, more rain, floods and more flooding expected

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2006: Rain, more rain, floods and more flooding expected
By Ginny~moderator on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 10:51 am:

We have had rain almost every day for the past week or two - like most of the Northeastern Seabaord. This morning I spent an hour wet vaccuming my basement, and left for work at 8 - usually a 30 minute trip but I wanted to allow extra time. I got into work at 10:15. One of the major roads was flooded and everyone was trying a work-around, so for about 2 hours, I was driving at 5 miles per hour. I'm going to try a different route home.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 11:20 am:

Ugh! It's been raining a lot in WI, too, but not as much as PA. Everytime I need to drive someone somewhere, I'm driving through a torrential downpour.

It happened on the 21st, when I had to pick up Sarah in Green Bay. It happened after we dropped Emily off at horse camp on this past Sunday and last night, when I picked up Sarah from her Pops Band practice, it was raining some more! I had to keep reminding myself that rainwater is good for my flowers.

You have my sympathy. Wet basements are no fun. BTDT!

Be careful, Ginny!!!!!!!!!!!

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 11:42 am:

When we lived in NY we got flooded a lot. We had to have an automatic pump installed to keep the water out the basement. I can relate. Please be very careful driving!

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 12:29 pm:

Yvonne, was that a sump pump, or something different from a sump pump? Our house didn't have a sump pump, when we first moved in. Then we got a 4-inch rainfall and we got 11 inches of water in the basement. In 1998, we got a 10.7 inch rainfall and we got 18 inches of water in the basement. Then my parents gave us money for Christmas to put towards a sump pump and since we got one installed, if it rains really hard, we only get trickles, instead of inches.

So, as long as the power doesn't go out, we're good. I still get nervous, when we get a hard rain, though.

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 01:19 pm:

Yep---that is it a sump pump. My brother has them in his houses in Maryland too. They also get flooded all the time.

By Kernkate on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 01:21 pm:

Ginny, many areas around me are also flooded. Its CRAZY! They are evacuating the Wilkes-Barre area here in PA because of the river. It is suppose to crest at midnight tonight...20 feet about flood level. I think we will be ok here I did have water in my basement but I have so far got that taken care of.
This is a pic of our towns firetruck responding to a flooded basement and the road gave out. The pole was holding it so it didn't go down on the road below. This was a block away from my house.

Stay Safe.

OMG-Kathy and Ginny-Both of you stay safe.((HUGS))

By Ginny~moderator on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 01:43 pm:

I'll be OK, but it will take much longer to get home tonight. I am worried about Kathy, though. I don't live near any rivers, thank heaven, and have a safe alternative way home.

By Colette on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 01:45 pm:

Hope you all are safe. We rain like this over Mother's day and I STILL have water in my basement because the water table is still so high. DD's best friend now has a pond, with a family of ducks where their veg. garden was. Some bridges around here are still closed - almost 2 months later - because the rivers got so high and so much debris got washed into them, the bridges became compromised.

By Nicki on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 02:09 pm:

I hope you will all be all right! Kathy, that photo is something. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 03:45 pm:

Keeping all of you in my prayers!

Yvonne, a lot of houses around here have sump pumps.

By Ginny~moderator on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 10:03 pm:

I'm home, after a meeting at church. The drive home was about twice as long as usual, with lots of slow traffic, but I'm not near any flooded areas except that one patch of road on my usual way to work. I'm going to take another route tomorrow - the one I took home tonight. It will undoubtedly be slow, but safe.

I am worried about Kate. According to KYW, all of Wilkes-Barre is being evacuated. Wilkes-Barre flooded very badly in the 1972 Agnes hurricane storms, and they built 41 foot levees along the river - but there is some fear that the river will top those 41 foot levees. So let's all keep Kate in our prayers.

I am also worried about my niece, who lives in Virginia a bit SW of Washington, DC, where they are also having pretty bad flooding. And she lives in an area with some man-made lakes and some rivers. I will be calling her tomorrow (it's too late tonight) to see how things are for them.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 11:24 pm:

I remember flooding in Wilkes-Barre, when I was a kid. I would have been 12.

Sending up many prayers tonight.

By Kernkate on Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 12:42 am:

We are ok, Wilkes-Barre is about 30 minutes south of me. I pray the water doesn't go over the levees. They are saying now the water may reach 30-34 inches so hopefully the levees will hold for all the people in the area.
We are in a safe area the Lackawanna river runs below our house so we should be ok. The Lack. river runs into the Susquehanna river which is the one in Wilkes-Barre.
Our only big worry would be is Still Water Dam which is 4 miles north of me, goes over. But that is still 125 feet below the road. This dam helps to control the water to the Lack and Susq. Rivers so they have not let any water out of it yet.
Stillwater
Please keep all the people in our area in your thoughts and prayers. There is so much devestation in our area. Scranton and Wilkes Barre were featured on Nightline tonight because of all the flooding. I just hope this is not a recap of teh Agnes flood because that was terrible. Thank god the worse we got was some water in our basement.
Ginny glad to hear your ok and hoping that your niece is also.
Colette you must have really had some major flooding in May?

By Kim on Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 10:17 am:

I am thinking of all of your ne moms! I hope you all stay safe and well!

By Karen~admin on Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 11:09 am:

Ditto Kim! Take care!!!

Around here, the Brandywine River was flooding and part of Rt. 1 was closed. It sure is a mess, isn't it?

By Ginny~moderator on Friday, June 30, 2006 - 09:19 pm:

Pennsylvania got off a lot lighter than expected - although a lot of people did get flooded out, and there were some deaths. New Jersey, along the Delaware River, really got hit hard, and I understand Trenton is a real mess.

By Deek on Sunday, July 2, 2006 - 07:56 am:

We drove out along the Delaware last evening..the Easton, Phillipsburg area..flood damage was everywhere and the high water mark was often above our car roof. The canal path ( very popular for biking and walking) is absolutely destroyed. Much of it was ruined in the last flood. It will be years before it is open again.
Many houses had piles of ripped up carpet outside and open cellar doors trying to dry things out.
It was so sad to see

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, July 2, 2006 - 11:42 am:

I'm so sorry. That's awful! It was like that here, in 1998, after we got 10+ inches of rain. There were piles of garbage for weeks afterwards, including at our house, too. (Although, we threw out so much stuff. Why is my basement all messy again?)
