Vacation Suggestions

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2006: Vacation Suggestions
By Sandysmom on Friday, June 23, 2006 - 04:03 pm:

Even though it's hard living on one income, I'd still like to take a vacation this summer. I do have a hard time with excessive heat but I'd still like to be by the beach or water. I live on the East Coast. Does anyone have any suggestions of reasonable places we can go to. I've never been to the New England states, but I've been curious. The heat down south is too unbearable for me during the summer that's why when we've went to the Outer Banks, it was off season and much cooler. I don't know how you ladies do it, living in Fla. & Louisiana, etc... How do you deal with the heat every day? Anyway, I'd love to hear your suggestions. TIA.

New England is nice. smileywink LOL! We tend to avoid touristy areas because we dislike crowds. Have you considered renting a cottage at the beach or on a lake? Our very best family vacations have been when we've rented cottages. We try to do it every summer. There are cottages available in different price ranges. It's fun surfing to check them out.

Even in the heat, I find that right on the coast is cooler, I suppose because you get the sea breeze, so of course, the beach normally gets my first vote. And I find it cheaper, and it would definitely better suit your family, to rent a condo or cottage or something similar, where you have plenty of room and can cook most of your meals and save money there too.

As for how we deal with the heat - CENTRAL AIR! I used to love the heat, and now it really bothers me. Central air, baby!!!!!! LOL Mine is on 74 when I am home in the daytime and 71 or 72 at night. I don't think I could live without central air.

lol Karen, mine is on 72-74 during the day and 70 or lower at night. I HATE the heat.

Look into some of the state parks. You can find little cabins, a little campy for pretty cheap. Arkansas has great facilities (degray lake) and they have park programs. If you don't mind camping a little you can really vacation for cheap.

LOL also Karen...ours is on 73 during the day and 72 at night. It's so stinkin' humid in IN, you just can't breathe here!

Ditto on the state parks...great outdoor fun and inexpensive, too. I hope you find a great place!

If you come to New England and stay at a state park, I would strongly recommend Vermont. The people who run the park for the summer also live there for the summer (it's required). They are by far the cleanest campgrouds/parks that we have ever stayed in. One in particular, Brighton State Park in Vt. is incredible, and you fall asleep listening to the loons. If you are looking for campgrounds that have pools and arcades and such, there are a lot of those in NH (none on the ocean though).

this is a very basic motel but it's been here forever and it's right across the street from a great beach and close enough to drive to a lot of activities http://dunesmotelryenh.com/

Thank you all so much!

another hotel, that's pretty nice and also right across from the beach is http://www.ashworthhotel.com/index.html

it's quite a bit more expensive though, and Hampton Beach is a totally different kind of beach (lots of shops, arcades, teenagers, etc) than the other one I posted.

Thanks :) I'll take a look!

I love Cape Cod, my grandfather has a house there, it's beautiful. The Outer Banks of NC are nice, too. Let us know what you decide!
