My poor furbaby :(

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2006: My poor furbaby :(
By Cat on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 - 10:50 pm:

Mr. Bean took a tumble off the back of the couch tonight. :( Now he won't put any weight on one back leg. We've checked it out pretty good and it doesn't seem to be broken, but when he does try to stand on it he falls and whimpers. I can squeeze (gently) it everywhere and bend all the joints and he's fine with that. I talked to my neighbor's dd who's a vet and she said there are several things that could be wrong with it but given what we can do we can probably wait until morning to have him seen at our regular vet instead of going to an emergency clinic. We did try to entice him with a treat (both dogs are trained to come running when I shake their treat container) and he did come a few steps but still wouldn't put weight on it. I hope he didn't break a growth plate. He's only 6 months old. Poor little baby. :( I feel so bad for him. Lucky just wants to play (he actually acts like he's worried a bit about Bean). I guess we'll see how he's doing in the morning.

I hope it's just sore and in the morning Mr Bean is back to himself again.

Awwww, I hope he's ok!! He probably sprained it, this happened with our dog, and she was fine in a couple of days. Fingers crossed that it's nothing serious!!

Poor little thing!! We had a dog that jumped off the couch wrong and ended up with a spinal cord injury. Same symptoms of not bearing weight. He didn't require surgery for it, but if he would have, they said it had to be done within 24 hours of the injury or it wouldn't have been effective. I don't say that to scare you, but make sure you call the vet first thing today just to be sure! It was a slow healing process for him, but ended up good as new!

Our vet opens at 7:30am. He still won't put weight on it this morning. He did it at about 7:30pm last night, so it's been less than 12 hours, and will be right at when I call the vet. He's still trying to chase the cat and he wants to jump up on the couch! I may have to lock him in his kennel, the little bugger. Oh, he just went in there on his own. I'll let you know what the vet says. Thanx for all the hugs. He really is my 'baby'.

Oh, poor Bean! I hope it's nothing serious. Please keep us posted. He'll be in my prayers.

Several years ago we returned from vacation to find one of our cats limping. We took her to the vet and he said she must have jumped from a high place and sprained it during the fall. I can't remember what the treatment was but she recovered fairly quickly.

By Vicki on Thursday, June 22, 2006 - 08:11 am:

Yes, I would crate him until you know exactly what is wrong. He could do further damage! While our dog was healing we had to crate him almost 24/7 too. No stairs, no jumping etc.

I dropped him off. They didn't have any appointments and today is a surgery day (one vet is out on maternity leave) so the vet that is there will check him out between surgeries. It's going to cost at least $169 (their estimate with all the xrays and exam fees and such--they usually go over their estimates). He wandered around their office a bit when I put him down to sign a paper and pooped on their floor! He always leaves them gifts. lol When I handed him to the girl for her to take him back he did whimper a little. We should know something by noon. Poor Lucky's lost without him. :(

I'm so so sorry to hear about Mr. Bean. Please let us know as soon as you hear from the vet. {{{Cat and Mr. Bean}}}

I just talked to the vet and there are no breaks in the bones. She did say that with puppies it's hard to tell if there are any breaks in the growth plates just because of the way they are, but she thinks there is an irregularity in the one in his knee, but when she examines it he doesn't resist. She said there's going to be a specialist in the office in the next few days and she's going to have him look at Bean's xrays. She said all this is good news/bad news because while she doesn't see any breaks we still don't know what's wrong. She said it very well could be a torn muscle or tendon or even a groin injury (but again, he doesn't resist any movement or manipulation). So we're going to treat with pain/anti-inflamitory meds for now. We talked about maybe him just being afraid to use it so he won't, also. *sigh* I wish animals could talk. I'm going to pick him up in a couple hours. The vet wanted to look him over one more time. She did say she loves him and he's the most adorable, cuddley, sweetest little doggie she's ever met! :) Oh, and he has three baby teeth that didn't come out that will have to be pulled. Ugh. Just like children. Thanx for all your concern. We'll see how he's doing when I pick him up.

By Tink on Thursday, June 22, 2006 - 06:50 pm:

I'm glad that there aren't any breaks and how wonderful that a specialist will be available to check over his xrays. I'll be hoping it's just a fear of pain that's keeping him from using it.
