Funny - Attitude

So I'm walking Sascha (100+# Rottie), and as I round the corner, across the street is a family with what looks like a large chiuaua, which, being that kind of dog, starts yapping like crazy and pulling at its leash. It just kept yapping and yapping, and Sascha kept ambling along, looking over her shoulder. I couldn't help myself - I stood there with my hands on my hips, roaring with laughter and the incongruity of this little ear-flapping thing thinking about attacking Sascha. At which point one of the men said "Well, he's got an attitude like a Rottweiler."

That's cute Ginny.

We have a pom that acts the same way. He has a napolean complex or something.

LOL! Ginny, I didn't know you were a Rottweiler person. I've heard they are good dogs but chew a lot of things when they are puppies.

Sandy, we got Sascha when she was about 5, from the SPCA, so I don't know her puppy habits. She has a large bone that she chews on occasionally, but chewing is not a bit thing with her. She is mostly a couch potato. I've given up trying to keep her off the couch when we're not home and just keep a cover on it for the dog hair. Everyone I know who has Rotties or has been around them says they are generally very sweet, low-key dogs, which is certainly true of her. She is a major clown, that I can tell you.

Actually, a Rottie would have been one of my last choices. Scott went to the SPCA to take the food and toys left from his dog Kheyla, who died from Lyme Disease. He came home to tell me he'd fallen in love. When he said the dog is a Rottweiler, I was very apprehensive and insisted on meeting the dog before it went any further. Rotties are always bit and very strong, and I was 65 at the time and not strong. My folks had Dobies, and brought one with them when we lived together, and after Prince died from cancer, we got another Dobie from a rescue group (who also died from cancer). I had decided that if I ever had another dog, it wouldn't be a big dog, because I didn't think I'd have the strength to handle a big dog.

The SPCA person who brought her out was a young woman - a girl, really - who must weigh about 90 pounds dripping wet, and the dog just ambled along with her. When she brought Sascha over to us, the dog climbed up on the bench and sat there smiling at me. Once it was clear I could walk her, that was it.

Last year when I was walking her, a neighbor's dog that was tied up outside started barking and lunging, and came within 3 feet of us. Sascha started barking and lunged, and I yelled NO as loud as I could. She immediately sat down and backed up on her butt until she was sitting with her butt between my feet. I haven't worried about handling her since.

That's great, Ginny!

I have a 60 pound yellow lab and airdale terrier mix. When I take her for a walk, we encounter the same thing and I struggled with her. I would allow her to meet the other dog, and they would touch noses first, then sniff eachother down towards the rear, then the other dog goes to sniff her under her abdomen (she is fixed) and my dog loses it and starts snipping at the other dog and getting into a tiff. I asked someone at the pet store what I should do, and she said to work on voice commands and obedience, that when you allow the dog to pull you on the leash, you are allowing the dog to take the dominant position. So the next time I took my dog for a walk, I tried it, and it worked. She obeyed me and had more respect for my authority than I even knew!

Funny how that works!

Very cute, Ginny! I love Rotties. I had one once, but I couldn't housebreak her so I gave her to someone. BTW, there was not a mean or aggressive bone in my Rottie's body - she was the sweetest dog I've ever known.

That is a really funny story

I had a rottie for about 5 years and he was the funniest mellow dog I had ever seen before. If another dog barked at him he didn't even look at them, he just kept on walking. The only time I knew I couldn't handle walking him was when there was a fire hydrant insight, so I would just try to hold on to the leash and run. He loved marking those things.

I want to get another one, but DH doesn't like dogs, so we are still trying to compromise on if I get one or not. I can't have an outside only dog, so I may end up without one at all :(
