Taking a steriod?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2006: Taking a steriod?
By Beth on Thursday, June 15, 2006 - 09:51 am:

I thought this might get lost in my other post about my neck. The doctor gave me a steriod and I think my neck in the front looks puffy now. Dh has already gone to work so I don't have anyone to ask if its just me or do I look funny? LOL! Anyway I am thinking with steriods you do get puffy? Great just the look I was going for. I am supposed to take these for 6 days. Please tell me that it goes away!

Yes, with steroids, you can get puffy. But it will go away after you stop the steroids, especially with it being so short-term. They can cause you to retain fluids and such. It's a normal side effect, so nothing to worry about. I think it's probably listed in the sheet that comes with the meds. Most people don't read those. I'm very sensitive to meds and have to read everything because I have ended up in the hospital a couple of times due to side effects, so I have to know what to watch for!

Good luck, and I sure hope you get some relief!

I have the paper looking at it. But they use all these big doctors words instead of puffiness or swelling. You would think that they would realize everyday people are reading these not doctors! I do see fluid retention on here so I guess thats what its is. Thanks! I really don't care as long as it is helping me.

Is it a Medrol dosepak?

By Beth on Thursday, June 15, 2006 - 02:03 pm:

Yes it is. Thank god I don't have to work today these meds while helping the pain really knock you out. I just got up from a nap and took a shower to try and wake up. I am going back tommorrow but won't be able to take these pills.

The dosepak can cause swelling due to fluid retention, but that will go away. It can also either make you hungry, or lose your appetite. I've taken those a number of times.

It is *probably* the muscle relaxer that is making you feel so sleepy. If you need them, you could try just the pain meds tomorrow without the muscle relaxers. Some of those really knock you for a loop.

I did what Karen suggested. Took the pain med after getting to work and then took both the muscle relaxer and pain med at night so I could sleep through the pain. Glad you're on the mend. Being in pain is horrible!!!!!

The steroids helped me except they made me hungry (not a good thing when you are trying to lose weight). I also broke out from them. In another day or so you might feel better. I also take pain meds and a relaxer at night so I can sleep. Hope you feel better soon.
