Karaoke this evening!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2006: Karaoke this evening!
By Luvn29 on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 - 11:03 am:

Emily's in a her first karaoke contest of the season this evening and she is so excited. Around here it is pretty difficult to ever win because of the age categories and there are a couple of little girls that are a couple of years older in them that travel all over the area opening football games and such that have a lot of experience who are wonderful on stage.

Last year she placed third and we were so excited for her.

She's singing Dolly Parton's 9-5. That's one thing with her. She likes to sing fun songs that the audience enjoys. She won't sing slow songs, which are usually the songs that win. But she doesn't care, because she just does it because she loves to sing and perform in front of an audience. Last year she sang "I will Survive"! That one was a lot of fun!

This is the biggest one she does, and the most fun, because it is with the Best Friends Festival that our city does all week long. The contest is held in the park and there is always a huge audience and a large participation. There's a pavilion/gazebo thing that they use as a great stage. It's a lot of fun!

I'll let you know how it goes!

Sounds like fun!! I am looking forward to hearing how she does!

Good luck Emily! (Or is it "break a leg" for all performers?) :)

Good Luck, Emily!! Good for her! I'm glad she sings what she likes and has fun with them. That's what's important. :)

Best of luck to Emily! I'm anxious to hear how her perform went. :)

Her performance went great! She did a wonderful job. However, as with many things, we were disappointed in the judging. Not just with her, because as I said before, she doesn't pick songs that are songs that often will win...

But there were a couple of other little girls that did an excellent job with slowish songs and they didn't place and they really should have. Now I don't know these girls personally, so this wasn't a biased opinion. Just some of that small town stuff. One of the little girls who placed is really cute and kind of young, and she looks cute up there, but she doesn't carry a tune well, and she doesn't know her words, she has to literally read them off of the monitor, so she doesn't perform while on stage, and she placed. This is the second year they have placed her and a more deserving girl hasn't placed, and I say this even when Emily did place before. I wish if they were going to judge on "cuteness" they would break up the age groups.

But Emily had a ball and she could care less whether she places or not, there were just a couple of really disappointed girls there who had reason to be. Emily slipped up in one place, which may have only been noticeable to me and her, but she did great, however she didn't place.

We think first place girls did really well, and deserved to place, but second and third, well, we saw other girls that we thought did a better job, but that's how it goes. The thing that bugs me is they refuse to give out the score sheets so you can't see what they thought you did good on and what you didn't.

Just so you know that I'm not "one of those parents", the year before last, in the 12 and under category, a little girl sang "Redneck Woman" bad words and all, and they gave her first place. In case you don't know, the song has several cuss words in it. I was horrified that she sang it, and then was rewarded for it. But, maybe that's just me. I am very careful about what I let Emily sing. I don't let her sing suggestive songs or anything.

Adena, in my experience with talent competitions, etc., judging is usually not impartial or fair. There always seem to be a few, certain favorites that win year after year. And in this area, much has to do with how your family is connected, or who you know. DEFINITELY an injustice to kids with talent.

Have you considered putting her in any regional or national talent competitions, like Star Systems or Talent Quest?

BTW, Kudos to Emily anyway! And I am with you RE: the kid singing Redneck Woman. Some things are just plain inappropriate.

When Jen was in competition dance, one of the younger choreographers who taught a class in the same age group as Jen - age 6/7 - had her little ones dance to a Boyz 2 Men song, "I'll Make Love to You" - which *I* thought was REALLY tacky.

I'm glad she had fun! Lots of girls would be devastated if they didn't place. That shows that she's very resiliant(sp?) Which I've heard is a very good thing. Good for her!!! :)

Thanks guys! Actually, Karen, I've never heard of those, so thanks for the links. We just let her be in one when she was six because she really wanted to. To be honest with you, I thought she would freeze up there because she had never been in front of an audience. She LOVED it and really played it out, even though she was in a cast from her thigh down to her foot!!!

I told her when she started, and I remind her often, that when it stops being fun, we'll stop doing it. There's one little girl that we know that is in all of these contests, and she is also in the Appalachian Children's Theatre, and has been for several years, and has leads a lot of time, and wins most contests, and she is very, very good. Well, last year she placed second instead of first, and she was in tears. Emily couldn't believe it. She had placed third and was thrilled. I told Emily that's what happens when you start expecting to win, and you stop doing it just to have fun performing. So she has a good head on her shoulders so far.
