Insurance vent

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2006: Insurance vent
By Yjja123 on Thursday, June 8, 2006 - 03:09 pm:

I am frustrated. We received a renewal from Poe homeowners insurance so we thought were OK. No, they are out of business. The renewal was a computer generated error. The Only company writing insurance is the state's policy "Citizen".
Our old policy $2300
Citizens-------$5000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, that is more than double! I have called over 40 insurance companies. Everyone says the same thing. Only Citizens. Argggggh! I wonder, is all of South Florida going to be insured by Citizens? Hmmm.. great way for the state to collect extra $$ by charging everyone double. We didn't even file a claim last hurricane. We had over $2000 in damage but we just ate the cost and did the repairs. It is sad that you fear filing a claim and even when you don't you get dumped.
Thanks for letting me vent.
Yvonne

That is outrageous.. You might be able to contact the state insurance board and ask if any other comapnies still have filings for homeowners. This would give you the right people to call. I don't know if this will help but it might be worth a shot instead of paying double what you were.

Yvonne, no one is even WRITING new homeowners insurance policies in New Orleans right now. We have State Farm and just had quite an increase. My boss's homeowners almost tripled from last year to this renewal.

The last couple of hurricane seasons have HURT all of us - if you didn't lose property, then your insurance premiums went sky high, or both.

I don't blame you for being upset. We had a minimal claim after Katrina (less than $5000) and I was afraid we would get cancelled.

Don't you guys have different policies for hurricane coverage though, or is it just different deductibles? And what about flood? My homeowners AND flood policies renew in a few weeks. The homeowners is included in the house note, which just went up, but the flood has to be paid by me. If you change your deductible, will that help your rate??

Karen.
We have Flood seperately through Nationwide and they renewed. There isn't an option of higher deductible for homeowners. I think it is wrong to not have a choice. You have to have insurance. We are talking over 100% increase in cost of our policy AND Citizens is not great coverage. It covers a lot less than our previous policies. Jeb Bush is not on my favorite person list at the moment!

Geez, that should be illegal!! My grandmother lives in WPB, and my DH's grandparents live half the year on the west coast of FL, one of the areas that was hit bad. I don't know how they are going to handle that increase, that is just AWFUL! I wonder what this will mean for FL's population, if people will just give up and move. (((hugs))) for everyone in hurricane areas.

Definite (((hugs))). I can't even begin to imagine paying that much for homeowner's insurance. I can't believe you can't change your deductible either...I've never heard of that! I'm really sorry about all of this!

OMG :0 ours is only $600 a year. (((hugs))))
