Evacuation update

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2008: Evacuation update
By Karen~admin on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 - 04:16 pm:

Well, we are still in AL. They are allowing people back into our Parish, but these are the conditions there:

*No electricity
*No working sewer system - no flushing toilets, no showers, dishwashing or laundry
*No gasoline available
*No ice available
*No grocery stores open
*Limited emergency medical care available

They said *if* we were to return, conditions would be *primitive*, and we'd basically be camping out. Except we don't have a camper, camp stove, camp potty, etc. LOL

Someone we know DID go back yesterday (in a camper) and drove out to our house today. Everything is fine, the house is intact, it appears that limbs from a tree are on our storage building, and obviously the yard is full of debris, but it *appears* there is no damage to our house. Woo Hoo! :)

So, we are obviously staying where we are until the power is back on and at least the sewer system is operational again.

Anyone live near Birmingham?? LOL

Thank you for the update Karen. I hope the power is back on soon. My kids are supposed to leave to return on Saturday, I would think that the miltary wouldn't allow them to return until the power is back on but I don't know. I know the gkids are getting restless.

Wonderful News Karen. I'm so glad your place is relatively unscathed.

This was on the news here tonight. Thought I would share it.

AT&T gives free to go phones to people evacuated from hurricane

The company announced it will hand out at least two thousand Gophones along with 15 dollars in air time For free To Hurricane Gustav evacuees.

Any evacuee who is 16 yrs or older is eligible for a phone.

They must present a valid id and zip code proof they are from a mandatory evacuated area.

To get a Go phone you can go to any AT&T store in Pensacola, Fort Walton, Destin And Mobile.

I'm glad it seems your house is okay, Karen. Any word from Pam about her house and family? Did she end up evacuating? Stay put and stay safe for now. :)

By Karen~admin on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 - 05:02 pm:

Don't know about Pam's house, I suspect it's OK, there was not flooding like there was with Katrina. She is evacuated in MS right now. Spoke with her yesterday, but haven't yet today. I believe her area is without power as well.

Just called Entergy, they estimate the power to be on Monday or Tuesday....I'll keep checking daily.

Are we having fun yet? :)

Good news...

You could drive up here and take me to Toys R US, like you said you would...

No, you don't want to come here, I have packed boxes all over the house.. Hey, you could come help me pack, I could keep you busy until you can head home.. I have to much to do and not enough time.. I could use all the hands I can.

Keep us posted.

ROFL Bobbie!!!!!!! TOO funny! I remember........

Well, there is some surprisingly EXCELLENT news this morning! My answering machine picked up just now!!!!!!! I will continue to call my house throughout the day to make SURE the power is *really* on, and then monitor the news and Parish sites to find out about the sewage system - if both are working, we are going home tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And if not, we'll wait another day...or 2....or 3....whatever it takes.

By Dandjmom on Thursday, September 4, 2008 - 11:56 am:

Karen,
Glad to hear that your is all right, and I do hope that your power is indeed back on so that you can go home. Not so fortunate for others, a co-worker that is at Pollock, LA one of our site employees called in to speak with me and told me that he and his wife are experiencing flooding and they are both using walkers and just recently had knee replacements so this is making it very difficult for them.

I received a email from the emergency management agency this morning regarding Hanna. That this weekend we may have strong storms from her. So I have to get reday for that, I guess all weekend activities are out. I know when we got the remnants of Isabell back in what was that 2003 it was pretty bad, no power for almost 2 weeks during the summer so it was hot.

By Karen~admin on Thursday, September 4, 2008 - 01:22 pm:

I don't know where you are located, but Hanna is to go up the east coast, likely making landfall in NC.

Ike is predicted to hit the Bahamas and take much the same track as Hanna at this point......

Josephine is ANYone's guess this far out......

Sorry to hear about your coworker.......some areas in LA definitely have more to deal with due to heavy rains and flooding. We REALLY lucked out on this one - I just hope it's the *last* one we have to deal with this season.....

If anyone is wondering where Gustav is, he's in Illinois dumping lots and lots of rain on us today.

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, September 4, 2008 - 03:09 pm:

Gustav is raining on WI, too! We had indoor recess today at school, on only the 3rd day!

By Mom2three1968 on Thursday, September 4, 2008 - 03:14 pm:

Oh hey, he sure is, I am in Ofallon, Illinois and it had been pouring all day here!!! Glad to hear that you may be able to go home soon Karen. Not sure when my kids will be heading home.

By Debbie on Thursday, September 4, 2008 - 03:54 pm:

Great news, Karen!! I'm glad you will be able to go home soon.

I hope everyone else that evacuated can get home soon too.

By Ginny~moderator on Friday, September 5, 2008 - 09:12 am:

And Hanna is supposed to dump a lot of rain on the Carolinas today and on SE PA tomorrow afternoon/evening.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, September 5, 2008 - 10:33 am:

Sun is shining in WI this morning and my New Guinea impatiens looks so happy today! It loves water.

By Shellyg on Friday, September 5, 2008 - 11:50 am:
