Hopefully it will not come through our area but we are being told to get prepared.

By Wandilu on Sunday, August 17, 2008 - 06:13 pm:

Yvonne,is it supposed to come anywhere close to Jacksonville?

By Karen~admin on Sunday, August 17, 2008 - 08:22 pm:

My sister's in P'cola and they are even keeping watch.......

By Annie2 on Monday, August 18, 2008 - 12:21 am:

Karen, you know I am P'Cola, too. Does she live here or visiting?
This storm better miss my area, I can not deal with another thing!

By Karen~admin on Monday, August 18, 2008 - 09:41 am:

Annie, she's been living there for 2-3 years, and just bought a little house there. She loves living there.

Looks like we escaped the brunt of it but we have had heavy rain all day long. Schools are closed today and likely Tuesday too. It was supposed to be the first day of school today (public school). Jessica and Addison were all excited, until I told them that we would have school as usual. LOL. Jessica's dance classes were also cancelled. It was to be her first night as an assistant dance teacher.

My 3 dgk's called me today and told me about their first day at school ( remember, they just moved to Fl a few weeks ago). Anyway, Nik,the 11 year old was telling me all about his schedule, and then said" Oh, we might not go to school on Thursday ,because there is a hurricane coming, maybe" I thought , Oh My ! Not so soon after just moving there!! I'm really nervous about this. I'm used to tornado weather, which is dangerous too. But, at least it's on dry land and in most cases you can take cover. But,water is a different story. And you guys sure have a LOT of water there!!! I know that sounds silly, but I was over-whelmed with the amount of water that is there, the first time we visited 2 yrs ago!! One of the first nights we were there, we had a room right across the road from the ocean, in St. Augustine. We were laying in bed, and I asked my DH if a Sunami could happen anywhere...to which I thought he was going to say they only could happen somewhere on the other side of the world ! Then he said "yes, he was pretty sure it could happen in any large body of water, like the ocean". Well, that did it for me !!!! I was a nervous wreck at night time when we had to go to sleep ( I guess I fiquered ,if it happened during the day, we could make a run for it !! :) When we were in Daytona...on the 5th floor, btw...I got up at 4 am and s.l.o.w.l.y. pulled the curtains back, TO MAKE SURE THE OCEAN WAS STILL IN IT'S RIGHT PLACE !!!! I know...this silly hillbilly needs to get out more often!! The next year was much better. I almost felt like the ocean was my friend :)

Looking out at Lake Michigan, is like looking out at the ocean. There is water to the east, south, and north, as far as the eye can see! You can drive for hours to the east and north and still be next to Lake Michigan. I guess I've never worried about a sunami here! I don't even worry about getting flooded, from the lake itself, but rainwater finds its way into our basement, anyhow.

When I lived in central WI, I missed seeing the lake, so much. I'm glad we are back by the lake now.

Will keep your family in my prayers.

Live in Volusia county and the kids have ONLY been to school one day this week...Our DSD was hoping to go to school today but by 5pm last night they changed their minds...We are fine. They will have to makeup the 4 days sometime in Nov.

We got 13 1/2inches of rain...thats in my little rain gauge BUT I know we got more than that...alot of the times the rain was coming sideways. The flooding was bad yesterday but it is better today.DSH went to wk and so did DSDs who wk... they didnt miss any wk..it was touch and go yesterday but they are all troopers!!!
Its on it way west now.
BYE BYE FAY!!

Wandilu, you crack me up! "make sure the ocean is still in its right place" Oh that just make me fill with laughing JOY! I can just see you sneaking to the window in the dark so the water wouldn't see you coming, LOL.

I was born in Jacksonville, and from 9yrs old to now have been living in the Tampa Bay area. So it has never crossed my mind that water on both sides of the state might be overwhelming for others.

While on vacation (GA and the Carolina's) I found it so odd to watch the news reports showing maps and no water anywhere on the screen. So much so that i have thought about it often since returning (2 wks now). Our maps (weather and traffic) are so easy to know exactly what you are looking at according to the land and water shapes. If the water is on the left, you are looking at the gulf coast, water on the right, Atlantic coast. The panhandle shows well, the Tampa Bay area and the Ft Myers bay area are obvious....all because of the water/land shapes.

Here in the Tampa area, we have had no bad weather. Yesterday we had some winds that felt good, and light rain. Today, more rain, but on the misty side of it, and stronger wind gusts. I love it! It is a slow moving storm allowing LOTS of water to cause damage in those under the worst of the storm. It's spread is pretty big. Just last night, the lower south end of the storm was still touching the keys...and the storm was up near Jacksonville!

We leave for Disney on Saturday and I'm not too hopeful at this point....rain really ruins it for me. Ame, have you bought and packed ponchos??

By Dawnk777 on Friday, August 22, 2008 - 11:32 am:

Ugh. I wouldn't want to be going to Disney right now. I was just watching the Weather Channel. It looked awful. Emily had a field trip to the Milwaukee Zoo, in 6th or 7th grade. It rained the whole time we were there. I was so cold, by the end of the day. (Late May or Early June isn't always that warm, in WI.)

Dana, I'm only used to water being off to the east! It would be funny to live in Cleveland, OH, where the great lake is up to the north!

By Yjja123 on Friday, August 22, 2008 - 12:26 pm:

I LOVE going to Disney on an overcast/slightly rainy day. You are not too hot and the rain cools you off. We always wear clothing that can get wet, so we are not wearing ponchos on the water rides.

By Annie2 on Friday, August 22, 2008 - 09:34 pm:

She's heading my way! Not too worried except my sunroom leaks when there is alot of rain.
Everything is picked up outside. DD's boyfriend just pulled down our basketball hoop.
We are epected to have alot of rain and gusty winds. I put gas in the car and took out some cash from atm. The one flashlight that I have is charged and ready to go.
The dogs are acting funny so they know something is coming. Oh, I also ran by garbage disposal. That can be key if the power goes out. :)

By Amecmom on Friday, August 22, 2008 - 10:16 pm:

We'll get rain gear down there if we need it. I'm packing as little as possible.
Good luck!
Ame

By Yjja123 on Friday, August 22, 2008 - 11:25 pm:

Annie,
Watch out for the rain gusts. Fay ripped the roof off our tiki bar and it blew to the opposite side of our yard just missing the jetski! Our patio furniture went flying against the fence and the basketball hoop fell down. All this from one gust that came through!
Stay safe!

By Annie2 on Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 06:51 am:

Thanks Yvonne! Nothing here yet. I guess later today. It is a bit windy out, I had to take Gumbo outside, but it feels nice.
••• is taking the girls for his weekend this am. (yeah, I know Sat to Sun, only two kids...whatever) So I will have 17 dd and ds, who does not want to go. DD is supposed to work tonight but I told her I am not letting her go if it is messy out because I hate to drive in the rain here. The sides of the roads flood easily and my car always feels like it hydroplanes.

By Dana on Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 02:00 pm:

I heard on the news last night that 6 people in FL have died due to this storm! Two due to car accidents and the others due to drowning. That's more than those hurricanes that came thru a couple years ago. I think I heard 5 others died in Haiti? So that is 11 people. That's alot, for a tropical storm.

I also heard that some areas have had 25-32 inches of rain! OMG.

Got a call last night about our mobile home located in the center of FL. A large tree branch fell into our roof above our bed and is just sticking out the top of the roof. We were told it is about a 4 in diameter whole. DH just left with the tools to repair it. I have no idea how bad the matress will be. I'm guessing unusable now. The rain has been non stop, so I just picture it being a huge sponge.

By Ilovetom on Sunday, August 24, 2008 - 09:35 pm:

We had like 6 inches of rain from her so after being in a drought it was sorta a blessing.

Bad storms yesterday and alot of people in town were without power 24 hours or so.

We have our limbs picked up tonight though.

By Dawnk777 on Monday, August 25, 2008 - 11:00 am:

6 inches of rain, would mean water in my basement. I'm glad you are okay.

By Yjja123 on Monday, August 25, 2008 - 11:14 am:

We, too received a great deal of rain. They said over 12" in the reserve. Since we have had a drought for a long time, Fay was a bit of a blessing.

By Ilovetom on Monday, August 25, 2008 - 03:27 pm:

And she won't leave......my girls are under a tornado warning 100 miles away from Mommy. LOL. Ugh.
