School Newsletter

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2008: School Newsletter
By Tunnia on Thursday, July 24, 2008 - 10:12 am:

I volunteered to be editor of the elementary school newsletter for the upcoming school year. Crazy!Crazy!Crazy! Fortunately, I have past newsletter experience, though not with a school. Unfortunately, I have no guidance on this since the school is dividing this year and no one from the past PTA is there to show me the ropes. There are only three PTA volunteers right now and I'm one of them. I'm basically going into this blind. I got a call from the PTA treasurer a couple of days ago wanting to know how far I was on the first newsletter. Uh, I haven't started because I have no info on it!!! I asked for the info at the end of last year and was told that it would be emailed to me, but it never was. No one from PTA has any past newsletters or knowledge of how it was done. The last editor didn't give the info to anyone and now she is gone. So I am digging through old school stuff of my dk's and hoping that somehow an old newsletter was put in there. I have a feeling that I am going to have to wing it and start from scratch which thankfully, I am confident that I can do and I will keep records of everything I do so that when it is time for me to pass it on the next person will have a clue! The treasurer was able to tell me what the budget is, but not whether or not I should get advertising or when any of the deadlines are. Oh what have I gotten myself into?:) I'm thinking that I may need to set up an appointment to speak to the principal about what he expects from the newsletter and I'll go from there. I am also thinking that I will contact the editor of the middle school newsletter and hopefully get a little guidance there.

I would welcome any advice from other moms who have done a school newsletter!

I did the monthly newsletter for our town Newcomer Club for two years. It was fun but I was glad to turn it over to someone else. LOL!

Does your school have a web site? Our schools post the newsletters on their web sites. E-mail me at cpstmom at gmail dot com and I'd be happy to share the links so you can look at them for examples and ideas, etc..
