My Baby got stitches

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2008: My Baby got stitches
By Missymelissy on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 11:02 pm:

Last night Isabella had to get 2 stitches in her forehead. She was at our front door knocking on it (inside the house), I was coming down the stairs - she knew I was coming behind her, she got all excited, lost her balance and hit her head on the bottom hinge of the front door. :(

She was a real trooper at the hospital - the only time she really cried was when I was out of the room and the Dr and nurses wrapped her up (swaddled) her and put the stitches in. I think the only reason was because I wasn't in the room and she was with strangers. As soon as the nurse brought her to me she had stopped crying and reached out for me - she hugged me so tight. Poor thing. I felt awful.

I feel so bad that this happened to my princess. :(

So sorry to hear that happened. It just breaks your heart when your babies get hurt. I hope you both feel better today!

Why were you out of the room when she got the stitches - your wishes or the medical professionals' orders? I know when one of my sons had to get stitches in the ER about 35 years ago I was there the whole time, and helped him hold still for the actual stitching. When my oldest caught the flu and got dehydrated I had to take him to the hospital and at that time (1964) they still didn't allow parents to stay with their children, but that changed in only a couple of years.

Thanks everyone, she's doing well, she's not even bothered by the stitches. She's a real tough girl and a real trouper.

Ginny, the Dr asked me to leave, apparantly they do that here. She's one, they swaddled her /wrapped her so she wouldnt move around. It broke my heart to hear her scream and call mom. The longest few minutes of waitng.

Saturday the stitches come out. :)

Well, I'm really surprised, Melissa. In the U.S., hospitals have been having parents stay with the child for this kind of thing for 30+ years that I know of, unless the parent's presence is unhelpful. I know with my boys, they were much better at holding still if I was holding them. But, my brother always passed out at the sight of blood and couldn't be in the room when his kids were getting stitches.
