Update on ds's surgery

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2008: Update on ds's surgery
By Annie2 on Friday, July 18, 2008 - 02:12 pm:

Everything went very well! Ds was a real trooper. He slept most of the afternoon yesterday. His nose was leaking blood but he could wipe it, then fall back to sleep. He took pain meds around 5:15. After that we walked down to the gameroom and he played ps2 with another kid for about 20 minutes.
He was able to eat some pudding, some chicken soup and juice, ice water around 6:00. He never threw up, thank goodness.
He fell asleep around 7:30, then woke up @ 11:30. He ate some more, then fell back to sleep until 5:00 when the nurse had to give him his antibiotic.
He feels worse now, exhausted and missing the mechanical bed! :)
His throat is hurting worse today and he has stopped talking. He now uses his dry erase board to communicate. His nose is becoming dry inside and that is uncomfortable. The dr said he could use some Afrin to keep it a bit moist, so we'll try that later.
Overall he was a terrific patient :)
Thanks everyone for your well wishes and prayers.
He's home now playing his new Sims game on the computer that I bought him. He's taking some more meds now so I'm sure he'll nap in a bit.
Unless he has complications the dr wants to see him in 8 to 10 days.
Yeah, he's going to breathe so much better once he heals.

Check with the doctor but Ocean Spray worked much much better for my DS. Keep the pain medicine in him on a regular schedule. I actually set a timer so I would know when to give him pain meds. Also, lots of fluids or else the throat will get too dry and he won't be able to swallow the pain meds. That happened with my DS.

Glad to know he's doing great. It's not fun being sick but it is especially bad in the summer when a kid wants to be playing outside. Let us know how he's doing and when this is over, you should treat yourself to something nice. It's no fun for mom either. Hugs.

Glad it went well. How was your ex? I hope he was supportive of your ds and nice to you.

By Yjja123 on Friday, July 18, 2008 - 03:18 pm:

So glad to hear that all went well!
((((((hugs)))))) to both of you!

By Rayelle on Friday, July 18, 2008 - 03:24 pm:

I'm glad it went well. How long is it until he should be fully healed?

By Annie2 on Friday, July 18, 2008 - 03:49 pm:

Dora, I do have Ocean spray. I am going to drip some in his nose to keep it moist before his nap.
I am going to keep him on the meds without asking him about his pain level for at least the next few days. I don't want to have him wait too long, then have the pain come back while waiting for the meds to work.
He's starving. I just gave him some luke warm soup with ground up crackers in it for fiber. He's eating it, thank goodness.
Dh was nice. We focused on ds. I left for a time while ds was in his room to pick up the girls so he could take them back to his place. He even asked the nurses to bring in a large reclining chair for me. Which dh was asleep in when we came back lol. There was a folding bed but the chair was very comfortable and reclined all the way back. I slept on that with the bedding provided for the cot.
I did not bring up anything negative and we even shared some inside jokes about ds. I was uncomfortable at times, just thinking in my head what he has done to me and this family but I had to let it go. Sneaking side glances of his hands, arms, etc...it was hurtful at times remembering our past but it's in the past.
Thank you everyone :)

I am so glad your ds is doing well!!! And once again, you have shown what a wonderful mom, and classy woman you are in dealing with your ex.

On a funny note....when dr was in our room checking on R iley about 7:30, he ran down what went on, what to expect....he asked R iley if he had any questions...ds's question to the ENT dr "can you give me some ice water, please"?
The dr gave him some and just started to laugh. :)

How is he doing today??

By Karen~admin on Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 09:11 am:

Bump!

By Conni on Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 12:29 pm:

I hope she doesn't mind me saying, I heard from her this morning. Riley is doing ok, overall. Considering he just had surgery and has swelling, etc... She can give you all the details when she has time. I know you are worried and didn't want you to think they were problem and they were back at the hospital or anything.

By Karen~admin on Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 04:22 pm:

Thanks, Conni. Annie, hope to hear from you soon!

By Annie2 on Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 08:35 pm:

Thanks, Conni :) I know I gave you an ear full this morning!
Riley is doing well. He can not talk, has some swelling but he can eat and drink without throwing up which is good in my book.
He's had pasta, mashed potatoes, soup, pudding....
I took a nap (I'm exhausted, not having a good night's sleep in four days) and woke at 6:45. I thought to myself, wow, I slept all night. Only to discover it's still Sunday :)
Dh is keeping the girls until Wed which will help. I don't want Riley bothered by them and I need the time to rest.
Thanks everyone for your well wishes and prayers :)

I am sure you probably know this but having him eat more cold stuff than warm stuff will help the swelling on the inside.. I learned this from my surgery since they went in from the front I had swelling all over my throat and neck (I wasn't allowed to eat anything warmer than room temp for 5 days). I actually found that when I felt like I couldn't talk and wanted to that I could drink a milkshake or eat a popsicle it would feel a lot better.

I hope he is feeling much better soon.

By Cat on Monday, July 21, 2008 - 10:42 am:

I hope he's doing better, Annie. Get some rest, girl! Hugs

By Nicki on Monday, July 21, 2008 - 01:39 pm:

I hope he's feeling better today.
You must be so exhausted. I hope you are both getting some rest.
I'll keep your son in my prayers.

By Annie2 on Monday, July 21, 2008 - 01:57 pm:

He is feeling much better today. Thanks everyone. He had some soft toast this morning. He just took a shower and I just made him some scrambled eggs.
We are hanging out today then maybe a trip to Walmart so he can spend his money. :)
I slept well last night so I feel much better, thanks for thinking of me, too.

By Tink on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 12:32 am:

I'm glad to hear everything went well and that he's healing nicely. Keep resting this week!

By Annie2 on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 06:27 am:

He slept all night and is still sleeping. He tends to sleep around 3 pm until the wee hours of the night ( regular summer schedule, mind you) but last night he stayed awake until almost 8 pm. His throat is really sore, I'm calling the ENT for a Rx for liquid lortab. He says the med he is on is not cutting the pain. Only takes it away for a bit. He had the hiccups for almost an hour yesterday and they brought him to tears...real tears.
The dr said he would feel more pain in day three to six, or so, which is happening. Poor thing.

By Truestori on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 05:52 pm:

Oh gosh, I hope he feels better soon. Sending well wishes his way. :)
