Company coming tomorrow!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2008: Company coming tomorrow!
By Paulas on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 - 06:31 pm:

I have a friend coming tomorrow that I haven't seen in 5 years. She lives on the other side of the country. She is travelling with her hubby and another couple.

What should I do to prepare for them? What should I cook? Meals?

By Annie2 on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 - 06:48 pm:

How long will they be visiting for? Are they staying at your place?

By Paulas on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 - 07:00 pm:

They arrive sometime tomorrow (Wed) and will be here until 11am Saturday morning. They are staying at our place so we'll get up early and wash all the sheets before they arrive tomorrow afternoon. Other than that, I haven't prepared much. We are in the process of getting our lot cleared for moving, just back from a weekend of camping and are heading out for a reunion and an entire week of camping after they leave.

I think I am so overwhelmed I just don't know where to begin.

I'd make it easy then, have a cookout, get takeout, etc.

By Annie2 on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 - 07:50 pm:

Buy stuff for sandwiches so they can help themselves during the day. Buy some breakfast fruits, muffins, cereal for breakfast, so they can help themselves in the am, too. If you don't drink coffee I would borrow a coffee pot from a neighbor.
I agree with Colette about bbq in the evenings and takeout. I'm sure they will do sightseeing so some meals will be eaten out.
Wash the sheets, clean towels for each and wipe down the bathrooms.
I tend to stress out when company comes and sometimes I don't know where to start.
Take a deep breath and relax. They are coming to see you not your house. They certainly will understand where your main focus has been the last months and coming weeks.
Enjoy your company :)

I agree, take a deep breath.. Nothing can ruin a good time more than over thinking things.. Just try to go with the flow..

Food...I am going to go a little off the beaten path here and say, make a plan. It is just so much more relaxing when that part is done. But do so, knowing you want to enjoy your company.

Breakfast, buy some bagels and cream cheese, buy some muffins (or make them if you feel like it), buy a couple of kinds of cereal and some fruit.

Lunches, really you probably won't be home, but deli meat and breads go a long way. Buy a bag of salad, so you can have something quick.

Dinners, Spaghetti, super easy, green beans, jar sauce. Tacos, just cook the meat, the rest can be bought. Plan a pizza night. And then I would plan a grill night, buy some steaks and a bottle of wine. You can go with some of those premade mashed potatos to save on clean up, or just serve with a salad. Toss some hot dogs on for the kids.

As for cleaning, bathrooms need clean, fresh sheets and towels. Then the kitchen, and then make it smell nice. use your room for a collecting ground, they won't come in there, so you can safely make a pile (or use a laundry basket) and deal with it when they leave and you have more time.

Enjoy your company!

Thanks ladies. I knew you all would make me feel better.

I'm heading to the store shortly to buy some muffins, fruit and deli meat.

They are having a rather laid back vacation so I really wasn't sure when they were arriving until Monday night when my friend called.

She wants me to take her in to the states. I think we might go to Freeport. I don't know if her friends are coming with or staying back here. She mentioned that her hubby is dying for BBQ but I don't know if they will be arriving in time for that today or if I should put on a pot of seafood chowder or something.

You're right...I'm overthinking.

Sheets are in the washer now and will be on the line shortly to smell nice and fresh. Kitchen and bathrooms were cleaned yesterday. I just have to do a quick refresher and mop the kitchen floor.

Thanks for all the great tips. Have I told you all lately how wonderful you are!
