Back-to-work

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2008: Back-to-work
By Chai~latte on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - 12:15 pm:

What have I done? A few weeks ago I saw an ad in the paper for a part-time job in my field; even though I wasn't looking for a job it was too perfect to pass up so I applied. Well low and behold I got it. It's 18 hours a week for a not-for-profit long term care facility, I'll be working in fundraising.

I even get to pick my own hours. Now here is my problem, child-care. My four year old starts school in September he'll go Mon. Wed. and every other Fri. full days. So I've decided to work Mon. Wed. and Fri. Most of the child care centers in my area have 1 to 2 year waiting lists and not many will be willing to accomodate a child 1 day a week every other week. I'm trying to get in touch with Wee Watch but they don't answer the phone! I'm trying to remain calm but I'm feeling a little panic stricken I start June 9 but I feel like I'm spinning my wheels. I called a couple of home care day cares yesterday and they don't answer the phone and they don't return phone calls.

Okay, I'm just here to get this out so I can stop worrying about, everything is going to work out right ladies?

What have I done?

I am also a firm believer in things happen for a reason. It will all work itself out. Keep up the hunt... LOL and have fun.

Everything happens for a reason and this will all work out! I'm struggling right now because I just found out I'm not going to be able to get financial aid for nursing school!

Congrats on the job! You'll get all your ducks in a row and be so glad you took the job!

You said that the job is 18 hours a week. i assume you will be doing your 18 hours mon, tues. and wed. Well can you maybe explain the sititution to the manager/boss at the facility about the daycare's having waiting list and see if that week that your son only attends school mon, and tues. if maybe you could also just works mon, adn tues that week as long as you do your 18 hours. it will call for 3 extra hours a day, i don't know how that will effet you but just a idea. Maybe a neighbor or your husband's schedule will allow him to pick him up on those two days you have to work late.

I just called a center and we have an appointment on Friday, looks like they can take us so we just have to see if we like them. I'm sure we will, it's a Christian run center (not that's the end all be all but it fits with our believe system) and my neighbor just raved about them. The really good news is they will accomodate my oldest for the alternate Friday and they are 3 mins. from the hospital where I'll be working. The only other concern is our vegetarian diet, I'm sure it's not a big deal, I may have to bring meals but that probably won't be a huge problem.

Thanks for the suggestions and support. Wish me luck on Friday!

Luvn29, good to hear about the help with school - good for you!

By Bobbie~moderatr on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - 03:19 pm:

Luvn29, just found out she won't be getting the financial aid she thought she would be getting.

I am sure they will accommodate your diet, you may have to do packed lunches, but I am sure your child won't be the only one their with meal "issues". I am sure everything will be fine.

By Chai~latte on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - 03:27 pm:

Sorry Luvn, I mis-read your post. I hope you find a way to make it all work.

By Dandjmom on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - 03:44 pm:

Luvn, sorry to hear about financial aid, Sad when someone wants to go to school and we have some out here that just wait there opportunity to go. I hope something else works out for you and you will find a way to go and do what you want. Prayers.

No problem! And this isn't a post about me, just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone!

I'm working on a way right now to figure out how to get there. Not giving up! Thanks so much!

I'm so glad this is working out! It will take the stress off of you, and God knows that you don't need any extra when starting a new job!

By Debbie on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - 04:15 pm:

Sounds like everything is falling into place. Congrats on the new job!!!!!

Hopefully, everything will work out for you too, Adena.

By Ginny~moderator on Thursday, May 15, 2008 - 06:50 am:

Adena, I am so sorry. Sadly, most financial aid is being cut right now. Scott is in college (taking a semester off because he needs to earn some money), and just got a letter about his Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Act grant for next year, and it is about $1,500 less than the grant he got last semester.

Chai, I'm happy things are working out for you.

Chai, I hope it all works out for you. Adena, I'm sorry about the financial aid.
