Your vehicals and gas prices

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2008: Your vehicals and gas prices
By Marie on Friday, May 2, 2008 - 01:46 pm:

I was curious to know if anyone else is having to trade or buy a vehical that gets better gas mileage. We have 97 suburban which I love because its roomy and the kids all have there space and we own a 97 villager mini van which is my everyday vehical and hubby drives the suburban back and forth to work. The van okay on gas which I can go 2 weeks on a full tank but dh goes throuh $30. every 2-3 days which it usually cost us 120 to 150 a month just for him to go not even 4 miles back and forth to work. We bought the suburban to take on trips for the room but when we budget a trip we have to budget triple of what we would normaly take. So I have been after hubby to sale the suburban and buy him a nice full size 6cyl truck. But I was just curious if anyone else is going through this. Its tuff

i have an SUV and i am really thinking of trading it in for a better hybrid.

Dh bought a motorcycle for commuting to work. Way better gas mileage. We also have an Acura and a Sienna minivan. I don't really drive far so that's a plus.

DH has an Acura sedan and I drive a Toyota Sienna. Neither are gas hogs, and both are fairly new, paid off and running great. We see no need to get different vehicles at this time. We do think twice about taking trips and try not to drive more than is necessary.

I have a honda odyssey and I would love to trade it in on a hybrid car but we also love the room when we drive to my mom's. I drive a lot.. I drive only abotu 15 miles round trip to work but I drive to lunch everyday and that is another 30 miles a day and then all the driving to the store or whatever is in my van.. I use about a full tank a week which is like $60+ a week. My dh drives a saturn L300 he uses about 1.5 tanks a month.. so that isn't too bad.

It is getting hard to deal with the gas price. But we will be down to only one driver for a while.. I won't be driving for at least a month after this thursday.. should make things easier.

the fact that my truck is paid off is keeping me from trading it in. it costs almost $80 to fill up my car and i do it at least every other week.

I have a Durango that only gets 12-15 MPG, but it's 3rd row which is what I needed for the kids. So, it's about 75-80 to fill the tank, and I need to do that about once every 7-10 days. :(

My 1998 Taurus gets about 17-18, in the city and about 26 on the highway. We probably should get something more efficient, but it runs well and it's paid for, so probably not.

Can't remember what the 1999 Saturn gets.

The 2005 Passat TDI, which runs on diesel, gets about 37-40 mpg, so even though diesel is more expensive, it's still cheaper to buy diesel, because it goes so much farther.

They're all paid for, which makes it hard to want to get a newer car.

I bought DH a motorcycle in February for commuting purposes since he drives 60 miles round trip everyday to work. His truck cost $100 to fill up and last only a week because of all the after market products he installed.

I have a Toyota Corolla and it costs me $40 to fill up and lasts about 10 days.

Both vehicles are paid for so there will be no trading in any time soon. I don't want any vehicle payments.

I have a cadillac escalade that is horrible on gas. We have such a large vehicle because we have 5 kids and we have a 30' camping trailer that we bought a few years ago because it was getting expensive to have to get TWO hotel rooms whenever we went on vacation. For what it costs for the gas to tow that trailer we could drive a mini van and get TWO hotel room. We are thinking about trading it off or else getting a car for me to do all the around town errand trips and pickups from school as long as I don't have to have all the kids and/or dh in the car that would work. My oldest is also 15 this summer so we could let her use the car in a year or so.

I was driving my 96 LAndcruiser for about 9 mos. It is a gas hog. I was filling up about every 4-6 days. About $50-$60 each time.

Last month I bought an 08 Honda Accord Coupe. It gets 30mpg on the hwy and has been getting about 24mpg in town. I LOVE it! But since the gas went up again it still costs me $50 to fill it up. lol Atleast a tank goes a lot further on it than on the old truck.

Are we going to have to decide between buying gas or buying food in the near future?? Do I need to think about getting a bicycle. ugh!

Prices are ridiculous and my pay check is not getting any bigger.

Conni, we LOVE LOVE LOVE our Hondas! DH and I are each driving (now) old, 1998 Honda Accords. BUT they are both paid for, both running and both getting between 25-28 MPG in the city and around 30-33 MPG on the highway (even though the paint is starting to erode on mine! LOL). Now that I'm not working, I only fill up about twice a month, and DH fills up maybe every 8-10 days.

Ugh! I drive a Ford Mustang! Not great on gas at all! But hubby drives a Toyota Corolla and it's great on gas. He also carpools with a guy to work, so that he only drives every other week. That helps.

What sucks is that I start school at the end of August and will be driving 20 miles to school and 20 miles back four times a week. Yuck!

By Bellajoe on Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 09:10 am:

I drive a toyota sienna, it does pretty well with gas. We can drive 4 hours to Cincinnati and not have to stop to fill up. I don't drive very far during the week which helps too.

Dh has a Toyota Tundra. I'm not sure how often he fills it up. HE only drives about 5 miles to work and back. He does drive a lot for work, but he does get an allowance for that gas he's using.

We are not planning on getting any new vehicles. The Sienna is only 1 year old and he got the Tundra a few months ago.

My DH drives a saturn which is currently getting about 32 MPG. He drives 60+ miles daily for his commute.
I drive a minivan which is currently getting about 27 MPG.
Unfortunately, we drive around quite a bit, so it seems we are always spending $$ on gas.

My partner just got himself a new truck. It's huge but he says that it will get better mileage than his old one *shrugs* He gets a car allowance through is job so it's not so bad. He's only paying just over $100 over the payment cost and he's convinced the gas will be cheaper plus it's big enough for us to take our entire family on camping trips etc. where the old one wasn't.

I'm looking at buying a pontiac vibe for me and the kids. I drive to work everyday and then all the sports trips etc. the mileage on it will be much better than the 89 bonneville I'm currently driving. The vibe gets about 34 in the city and 46 on the highway and it's a 2.4 litre.
