Pin worms

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive March 2008: Pin worms

My 11 year old ds has pin worms! For the last week or so he has complained at night time that his bottom iches and that it's keeping him from sleeping. First thing I think is that he is'nt wiping properly, so I tell him he needs to start cleaning himself better after bowel movements. Well, two nights ago he calls for me to come into the bathroom, something he NEVER does anymore, privacy is HUGE when your an 11 year old boy! :) Anyway he tells me that he thinks he has worms! So I look into the toilet and I saw very tiny, a little bigger than the width of a strand of hair, white worms!! I really had no clue what these were. I told him not to worry, no big deal, go on to bed and I'll get you some medicine in the morning. All the time I'm saying this I'm totally freaking out in my head, because I really had no clue what they were or how they are treated. I just did'nt want to freak him out too. I got strait on line and found that they are pin worms, and they are very easily treated. I called the doctor the next a.m. and she called in medicine for everyone in the house. Even though nobody else has noticed anything, she said it's still best to treat everyone. So now I've been cleaning bedding and the bathrooms, stressing hand washing, keeping fingers out of your mouths, and other sanitary steps. Has anyone else ever had any experience with pin worms and did it clear up quickly? Thank God my kids have'nt stayed over night with anyone in a long time. :) Just when things seem to be calm, life throws a curve ball to keep ya on your toes! LOL

UGH! The dreaded pinworms. BTDT Kids have dirty hands and the put them in their mouths, or bite their nails. Our Ped. always told us that was how most kids get pinworms. And of course, you want to do the cleaning, washing, etc. and treat everyone. As I remember, it was a single pill treatment?

Good luck!!!!

And how are YOU doing?????

I tell you, until I become a mom, I had no idea this kind of thing existed!!!!

Good luck!

Ugh! Pinworms! I had them as a kid so I recognized the symptoms immediately when my dd got them the first time. And yes, I said the FIRST time. There have been repeat visits! LOL! My son has never gotten them, but my daughter is the one with her hands in the dirt all of the time.

Now you can get the pill without visiting the dr. You just have to ask the pharmacist for the medication and you can get it OTC. Much more convenient! Thankfully, we haven't had to deal with them in a loooong time!

And I just want to stress, unless you have had these personally, you just don't understand how severe the itching is. So if your kids ever complain of it, take them seriously and get the problem solved the next day because it is unbearable miserable at times! I had them as a pre-teen, and I still remember the agony!

My dd had pinworms in the 3rd grade. It took a couple of nights of her crying, for her to finally say LOOK. Well I saw them...i understand your horror. YECH! But it was one pill treatment. We treated all the kids and my husband, but I was suspected to be pg and so didn't not take them. No one else got them. Really it is very easy to care for, one pill, do the laundry, remind your son how important hand washing is. They can also pick them up in the dirt and then if they don't wash their hands and they hold a pencil and the pencil goes in the mouth....etc...etc.

I had a friend, who didn't want the one-pill treatment, so she was giving her kids garlic tablets. I think it also does help, just takes longer. I myself, would opt for the one-pill treatment, if it was me.

Poor kid. I can imagine an 11-year old boy wouldn't want his mom in the bathroom, but I'm sure he was pretty freaked out.

Yes, we all got the one pill treatment. I'm stressing the hand washing and keeping hands out of mouths. Hopefully this does'nt visit us many more times in the future...the thought of it creeps me out! LOL Anyway Karen, thanks for asking, I'm doing great! Been clean for almost 8 months and I no longer miss it. Yes, at first I did miss it. I know that sounds terrible, how could I miss something that was tearing my life apart..well, it sort of becomes a love/hate thing, like a reliable friend who does'nt look out for your best interest...anyway, I'm finally over that part, and I now look back and just try to learn from my mistakes. I will try to post an update soon, I'm really busy with work and such. I usally have time to pop in a read a bit and that's all...but I will try to make some time soon. Again, thanks so much for asking about me, it makes me feel good to know that you were wondering :)
