Text messaging

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2008: Text messaging
By Adilanylkoorb on Saturday, February 23, 2008 - 07:47 pm:

Does anyone know how it works when you send someone a text message using your computer. I have found a few websites that I can do this from, but I can't figure out how I would get a response back though. I'm only interested in texting someone not calling them. So I don't really want to buy a cell phone. Besides they don't work out here in the country where I live, so it would seem pointless to buy one. Is there some kind of gadget that I can buy to send text messages instead of using a cell phone.

If you have email they can send you a message to your email and you can talk that way. Cell phones have a feature in them that allows them to receive emails also. Once you get a note from them you can save whatever address it comes through as in your contact folder for future use.

The person that I want to text told me that she doesn't have email on her phone. She said that it would cost to much to have that on her phone.

I don't know much about cell phones and I guess I could just look it up but I'll go ahead and ask here while I'm at it: is cellular a type of phone company like Verizon and Cingular? Someone was at my house a few weeks ago and they were talking on their cell phone in my driveway and they were getting good signals. But now I can't remember which company they had their phone through and I can't get in touch with them to ask. I thought that they said Cingular, but someone else tried to use their Cingular phone out here but they couldn't get any signals. That's why I was wondering if Cellular is a compay because that might have been what they said instead of Cingular. I guess if I have to then I will purchase a cell phone, but getting one that won't work out here would be pointless. I would like to get a tracfone or some type of prepaid phone because I don't want to have to sign a contract. But I don't know what to do because I don't need a phone that won't work.

If she doesn't have it then it will not work. Sorry.

if you have yahoo messenger and the person you wish to send messages to has yahoo and their mobile phone can be connected to their yahoo account than you can send them what is called an SMS message. The person receiving them may be charged for the messages sent and received. I believe but I'm not 1005 that they can reply to the message and it would be sent to yahoo messenger.

I think the only drawback may be that they may not be able to list their phone with yahoo as it's a fairly new feature there aren't too many cell phone carriers available. I know I'm not able to connect my cell phone to it however my friend in Colorado was able too
