DD sick and family exhausted!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2008: DD sick and family exhausted!
By Angellew on Friday, February 8, 2008 - 09:27 am:

I am so tired! And my poor DD is like a little zombie!

It started on Sunday, she woke up coughing and was just not herself! All she wanted to do way lay around, which is very unusual for her. We had her favorite uncle and some friends over for Super Bowl and she could have cared less. She had a slight fever, but nothing Tylenol didn't bring down. I kept her home from school on Monday and my mom stayed with her. When I got home at 5:30, my mom told me that the Tylenol wasn't really bringing the fever down all the much anymore. My DH had called the ped. that day and they said the symptoms were common of a lot of what they had been seeing... keep doing what your doing. Call us it it gets worse.

Well, she was at 102 at 5:30, gave her the Tylenol. At 9:30, she was almost at 103, gave her more Tylenol and put her in my bed with me to keep an eye on her and try to get her to sleep. At 10:45, my husband checked on both of us, and she was red and burning. Woke us both us and had us both dressed in minutes. Off the the Emergency room!!! That's when she started throwing up (all water and mucus). They had to put in an IV to give her fluids and chest x-rays. We didn't leave there until 8:30 the next morning. She has bronchitis, and maybe the beginning of strep, but they didn't bother testing her for it. The antibiotic they gave her for her chest would kill anything in her anyway! So, they sent us home with antibiotic, and directions to give her Tylenol, Motrin and some Delsym!!!

But, now that the cough isn't a "wet" cough anymore, it's really bothering her. She's coughing constantly and the Delsym just isn't working! The poor baby is propped up on all kinds of pillows (the bed is already tilted, too) and the humidifier is on and she still can't get a moments peace to sleep! I feel so bad for her! Not to mention, I'm like the walking dead. I slept with her last night and every time she started coughing bad, I was giving her ice water! She finally fell asleep somewhat peacefully around 3am, so I went back to my bed to catch a couple of hours before work!!!

I think I'll call the ped today to see if there is something stronger they can give her! She's so tired!

Thanks for letting me vent!

Poor baby! and poor mum! I saw in the news that the flu is running rampant in Massachusetts so I imagine it will be hitting us too. See if your doctor will prescribe something with a little bit of codeine in it so she can get some rest. Make sure you tell them the cough is keeping her up.

{{{hugs}}}

I would definitely see if they can give her a different cough medicine. Both my boys have asthma, and are prone to getting horrible coughs with colds. I have used Delsym, and I have found, that it does nothing for my dks. Their doctor always gives me a prescription cough medicine now, and it works so much better. Also, have you every used Vicks vapor rub. It seems to really sooth my oldest ds when he gets a bad cold/cough.

Hopefully, she will feel better soon, and you can all get some much needed rest.

That sounds like the virus that's running rampant in our area. I don't know a family that hasn't had it and my dks and I just got over it. It's miserable and turns into bronchitis quickly. The Delsym did nothing for us, either. The doctor prescribed a great cough medicine that has the active ingredient in Mucinex and codeine so her cough is productive and she'll sleep through the night better. We also used Vicks on our chests, backs and the bottoms of our feet. Good luck and I hope your dd is feeling better very soon.

The nurse just called me back and told us to try regular Robitussen DM (1/2t every 4 hours) and liquid Benedryl (1t every six hours).

My DH was not happy about that answer at all! Of course lack of sleep will do that to a person. He was yelling into the phone (at me, of course!) "we will not have another night like last night. If she even starts out like that, we're going back to the ER!" Which I am not doing!!! Four hour wait so they can give us cough medicine!!! He can suck up another night and I'll get her into the pediatrician on a weekend visit!

Angela, call them again later this afternoon and tell them the benadryl and robitussen isn't working and that you need the doctor to call in something stronger. If that doesn't do the trick have the doctor paged after hours and maybe then he will call something in, let your dh talk to the doctor and maybe him telling the doctor that he's taking her to the ER if she doesn't get some relief will be enough of a push to get a Rx.
