Dh's job aggravation vent

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2008: Dh's job aggravation vent
By Rayelle on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 - 08:36 pm:

Ugh! Over the last few years my dh has been to a ton of job interviews that sounded good until you were there. Things like a company we actually heard of paying $700 a week but you work upwards of 90 hours a week which makes it not good after all.

Dh just began a job that was finally full time, in his field and paid better with more opportunity. They hired him immediately. He is an assistant manager. The actual manager can't do her job, is on warning etc. She messed up the paper work process so he is still without a direct deposit check. She has his taxes filed as though he were single so his check this time will be for less than we thought. They are giving him 34 hours instead of 40. Instead of it being a typical work week like they said it is 6 days a week, 3 or 4 hour shifts sometimes. With gas this is ridiculous. He also had to drive about an hour for training. The manager was supposed to tell him this 2 weeks prior, forgot and gave him less than 24 hours notice.

I can't believe how difficult this is! What is the point of hiring people and then turning around and changing the story of the job? This also happened recently to a good friend of mine. She has a good part time job on weekend evenings and needs a full time job as well. During the hiring process they said they needed her to work 1 weekend a month. She told them she could she just needed day shifts on the weekend but could do any hours the other 5 days and they said that would be great. Two weeks into training they made it 2 weekends and month, had her scheduled when she said she couldn't work and told her to go find something else. Is this kind of thing common?

Totally common....at least in *my* area.........and totally unfair. If employers expect their employees to be honest and direct with them, then they should show them the same courtesy. Particularly when someone is interviewing for a new job/position - if they have families and a working spouse, they need to know up front when they are expected to work, and they are obviously looking for jobs that will work around their family/spouse schedules. I really hate the *say one thing-do another* thing that goes on.

Another thing that's all too common is nepotism. When DH first moved from DC to N.O. in 1997, he was looking for a specific type of job. N.O., not being a home office for major retail chains, did not offer much at all in his field. So he took a job as a store manager, based solely on the statement from the company CEO that within a year he'd be a D.M. Well, a year later, the CEO's SIL was made D.M. DH was finally made a D.M. 3(?) years ago, then rapidly moved up to Regional Buyer, which is his field anyway. My point is, it took all those years for the company to come through with what they originally told him when he was hired.

I am sorry this happened. Our rule of thumb is to have it all in writing. My hubby had 1 management position that their story changed after they hired him. He now requires a written agreement. He has never had a problem getting it in writing.
