Red Food Dye Alternative

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2008: Red Food Dye Alternative
By Tunnia on Friday, January 25, 2008 - 08:31 pm:

Does anyone know of a natural alternative to red food dye? I tried looking it up online, but all I found were sites selling products. I want to know how to make my own.:) I want to make red and pink frosting for a Valentines treat for ds's class.

This is a whole list of different colored dye to make naturally. I think the red was done with beets.

lots and lots of boiled red onion skins.

I think that boiled onion skins, while it works for Easter Egg dye, might not add a very nice taste to frosting, but beet juice might work, I'm just not sure how to do it. I don't want the flavor of the beets and I'm wondering how well beet juice would work in frosting. I'll check out that website, Rayelle. Thanks ladies!
