FAT cat needs diet

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2008: FAT cat needs diet

OK ladies with pets help. How do you put 1 cat on a diet when there are 2 cats in the house. 1 doesn't need a diet the other does.

What is a normal amount of food to feed a cat daily? I was told wet food it less fatty than dry due to water in the wet. How much wet a day do you give and do you still give some dry.

This cat is in real need of a diet. They are my brothers cats and he is at a loss as to what to do.

I was thinking of posting this same thing, except O have one fat cat (13+ pounds) and 1 really skinny cat (~6 lbs). They both eat the same dry food, Iams, that stays out all day. My fat cat is our baby and she's about 3 years old. The skinny cat is 15 years old, but he's in excellent health per his last vet visit. I am thinking of taking him back and having his thyroid checked because he eats pretty well, but just isn't gaining weight. He's a Himalayan (read: LOTS of fur) so he doesn't look skinny, but when you pick him up or pet him there is nothing there and you can feel his bones sticking out everywhere.

Cats should always have dry food because it is good for their teeth. Whether or not to also feed wet is a personal opinion. I don't because of the stink and the mess.

I agree with them needing the dry food for their teeth & so does my vet. I feed my cats 1 packet per cat of wet food a day as a treat & their dry stays out all the time. The box of the wet foods says to feed them 1 packet per 5 pounds 3 times a day, but because I keep out the dry food I don't follow that.
I have a kitten that is nice & lean, then I have the tubby tabby, she is a Munchkin Torte that is only 1 pound over weight. I think she looks more over weight because of how short she is.

My brothers cat is very overweight. He doesn't want to starve her but he knows he needs to cut back something to make her lose weight. He can put food up higher for the smaller cat to eat but he cannot leave food at the fat cats reach all of the time. He can only put it out to feed her. She will eat until it is gone no matter how much it is.

Is a cup of dry and a can of wet enough for a cat for 1 day. He was thinking half a can of wet in the morning, a cup of dry at lunch and 1/2 of can in evening for dinner.

Is that not enough what do you think? Ginny what does your son think?

Add me to the list of needing a kitty diet!! One of my cats is getting really fat, and the other one is way too skinny, she feels like skin and bones when you pick her up. Callie (the fat one) doesn't eat at all during the day, she frequently will not move from the bed all day long, but she pigs out at night. I leave dry food out all the time, and she will finish it, no matter how much we put in the bowl. Zig, on the other hand, had escaped from the house for a few days, and came back emaciated. We fed her some wet food, and some milk, she's eating well, so I hope the weight comes back.

I would get advice from the vet. It could be if the cat is over weight, they might want it on special food or less frequent feedings. Your brother might need to keep their food put away and then feed them at certain times since the cats will likely be on different foods. Has he talked to his vet about it?
