Swollen ankles ??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2008: Swollen ankles ??
By Trina~moderator on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 - 11:34 am:

Last night while shaving my legs I noticed my ankles were slightly swollen. This is something totally new and unusual for me. I never got swollen ankles, even when pregnant. With all my female issues lately, and just getting a Lupron shot almost 2 weeks ago, I thought it might be a side effect. I called my GYN this morning, and she said it's typically not a side effect of the meds I'm on. She said to wait and watch for a few days and if it gets worse to see my regular doctor. I did some research and scared myself. I decided not to wait, called my regular doctor's office and was lucky to get an appt. tomorrow morning.

What have your experiences been with swollen ankles?

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 - 11:43 am:

Yes, in my case it was just water retention and I ended up on a diuretic. I have a family history of the issue but they ran test to rule everything else out.

Trina, I think we are falling apart. LOL

((((HUGS)))) and I so feel for you....

For us here it is always water rentention don't scare yourself just relax until tomorrow when you see you Dr. Stay off your feet until then. Try to keep them elevated.

I have huge issues with fluid retention. Once or twice a week I have pitting edema in my lower legs, feet and particularly ankles. I'm very sensitive to salt/sodium content in all foods, and if I sit too long with my legs hanging down, it just makes the swelling worse.

Watch your salt/sodium intake, drink plenty of water (add some fresh lemon juice to the water, it's a natural diuretic), elevate your legs when you can.

Another thing, in the last few years (since menopause LOL) my blood pressure went up, and my PCP put me on Dyazide, which is basically a fluid pill, that I take each morning. It's not like taking Lasix, etc., which makes you pee all day, and I usually end up taking that once a week anyway. But fluid retention will raise your blood pressure.

Certain hormones CAN cause swelling in your legs and feet, if I were you I'd research the Lupron. According to this, fluid retention IS a side effect.

No advice, I have never had to deal with swollen ankles, but considering your female issues, it is probably nothing. Don't ask Dr. Google, you'll just freak yourself out, and good luck with the appointment tomorrow. I'm sure you'll be fine!!

Thank you, everyone, especially Karen, for that link!

Just got back from seeing my regular doctor. Everything else checks out normal, so he agrees it's a side effect from the Lupron. Elevating my feet when possible and cutting out sodium, caffeine and alcohol have made the swelling go down. He said if I had anything major going on, those things wouldn't have helped. I'm glad it's nothing serious, but GOD, I want to get this hysterectomy over with and back to my normal life!

I'm glad it's fixable. When are you having the surgery?

By Trina~moderator on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 - 03:23 pm:

I'm tentatively scheduled for late Feb./early March. My GYN wants me to be on the Lupron for 2 mos. before surgery. Apparently, this will shrink my uterus, fibroids and endo, which will allow her to do a LAVH (laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy) as opposed to an abdominal one.

Okay. Will keep you in my prayers.

Thanks, Dawn!
