Dutch Oven

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2008: Dutch Oven
By Emily7 on Saturday, January 5, 2008 - 07:20 pm:

I have a Dutch Oven that is very old & I hardly use. I used it today to make Rachael Ray's mother's Cider Beef Stew (awesome flavor), do I need to re-season it? If I do how do I do that?
TIA

Is it cast iron?

We only use our dutch oven for camping. We decide that it needs reseaoning if a. it is rusty, or b smells bad. To re season ours we scrub it with an sos pad as clean as we can get it, coat it with oil and bake it at 350 for an hour. Then when it is cool we spray it heavily with pam. After each use, we clean it gently, then respray it, you have to be careful to store it with the lid cracked (we put folded up newspaper in space), or it can "spoil".

Have fun. Our very favorite is the cobbler. Take a can of fruit, dump it in, top with a cake mix, toss some butter pats on top, then sprinkle with cinamin..yummy yummy!
