Social Security Disability

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2007: Social Security Disability
By Anonymous on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 02:31 pm:

I'm asking this on behalf of my friend and her father. My friend is disabled and has been since birth. Her father was recently approved for SSDI. She is already drawing SSI for herself, but was told that she has to apply to see if she can draw off of her dad's SSDI. If she is approved, does anyone have any idea on how much she'd be able to draw and will it affect how much her dad draws. She is currently making around $400 with SSI. and he will be making around $1200 with his SSDI.

Also, they were told that her father can't get insurance for at least two years after getting his SSDI. Why is that and is there anything that can be done about it? He REALLY NEEDS insurance right now, due to all of his health issues. He needs to be able to go to a Cardiologist and have his hernia checked out and may need surgery for it.

As far as insurance goes, when my mother received it, she also received medicare part a/b. Although she didn't use it because she was still getting disability from her employer and had her company's insurance and it covered more of her medical cost. As far as the daughter drawing off of her father's SSDI , I only know a few cases of kids that draw from a parent's SSDi and they are all under the age of 18, and it does not affect the father's monthly benefits. I believe the two daughters both get nice benefit amounts ( more then $500)a month.
I was under age when my mom went out on disability and once her social security was approved we where contacted to come into the office and bring my school transcripts with us. and once there the worker/rep that had called us in told us that since I was a minor during the time my mother had to stop working and go on disability that by law they had to pay us for the time I was still in school. So it had been about a 2 1/2 year period from the time my mother got sick and was finally approved for SSD, but I had only stayed in school for a 10 months after she got sick I eventually left to take care of her. So that's they sent me a check in my name for that time period.

First of all, the rules of Social Security suck.. But it is true, your friends father will not qualify for Medicare until he has been "disabled" for 24 months. Your friends father needs to go to the local welfare office and see if he qualifies for Medicaid. Other wise his surgeries will have to wait.

There is something else that your friends father may not be aware of because I know most people are not... Medicare part A only covers hospital stays and that is only at
. You have to pay a monthly fee, out of your minimul checks, of a grand total of $93.50 as of today, effective Janurary 1st, 2008 this will increase to $109.40 a month and it increases Janurary 1st of each years so in two years who knows what it will be, to have Medicare part B coverage. Then on top of that the coverage to see a doctor under Medicare part B is only 80%. If he charges 100 dollars for a doctor visit then Medicare pays 80 and the friends father will owe 20 dollars at the time of service. Neither of these cover prescriptions by the way, so he will have to pay out of pocket for those or get a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan, which has a monthly primium and copays for each prescription also. So in DH's case I pay $45.20 a month for his prescription plan and I pay between $5 and $10 per perscription and he is on 8 prescriptions plus all of his diabetic care supplies. For most this would seem good but if you look at your friends dad's income of $1200 a month and you take out the primiums and copays he will have every month that isn't going to go very far.

He needs to go to the local Welfare office and apply for Medicaid. He will need proof of income (his award letter from SSA), proof of debt (monthly bills) and he will need the title for his car and any other think he might own. They pay medical bills up to three months prior to approval of coverage. They will cover his doctors visits, prescriptions and his surgeries IF he qualifies...

As far as your friend... It is not likely that your friend will qualify under her father, unless she is still a child, which I am assuming she is not.. If she is, she will get switched over to SSDI but it is only a percent of what her father qualifies to get, I can look that up later if you want, but they should be able to tell her over the phone if she qualifies.... IF she is married, if she has been married, if she is over the age of 21. Then sad to say, she is stuck with what she makes. Does she still live at home? She should be on Medicaid too, they do that automatically with a SSI award.

Need to go eat.. Check back in a few. Over look the spelling, not even going to proof read this, you will get the just.
