Question for anyone, but especially teachers

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2007: Question for anyone, but especially teachers
By Bellajoe on Sunday, December 9, 2007 - 11:35 am:

My 3rd grader always forgets to capitalize letters! She would get 100% on a LOT of papers if she just remembered to capitalize. She does the work correct and answers correctly, but she gets pts. off because of capitalization. So she could get an A but ends up getting a C :( It's so frustrating.

Any suggestions on ways to get her to remember to capitalize?
TIA!

I'm surprised she would go from an A to a C for forgetting to capitalize. What exactly is she forgetting? Is it the beginning of sentences, proper names, etc or all capitalization?

Does she self edit her work before handing it in? That would be my first suggestion. Is she remembering her punctuation? Ask her teacher if she would mind if your third grader used a highlighter to highlight each letter after the punctuation. Then have her go through it and check to make sure each highlighted letter is capitalized. This of course, would be temporary until she got into the habit of self editing and eventually would not have to use a highlighter to remind her.

Just a thought.
