New Neighbors

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2007: New Neighbors
By Marie on Sunday, December 2, 2007 - 07:48 pm:

We got new neighbors Saturday. From what we can see its a Mom and son. In the past we have has some rough and not so nice neighbors. We still have drug dealers on the left of us which that house is a rental.( many calls to police and they don't do anything on drugie house). Our past neighbor(who is now come) had a dog that ran all over and we called animal control and turned her in. Well our new neighbor has a small weenie dog that she lets run anywhere and everywhere. We have 3 dogs that are fenced and not allowed to run and I don't think that its all that fair that she can just let her run freely. So should I just call the animal control and have them come out and sight her or should I just say something to her.

(also I just wanted everyone to know that this is Shann. I go by Marie all the time so I thought I would change) also Thank you to the mods for doing that for me.. you guys are wonderfull

I think I would call animal control. Animals aren't supposed to run at large.

I think I would just say something to her.

To get off on the right foot you could bring some cookies and a Welcome to the Neighbourhood card or something. Mention, after a warm welcome and introduction, that you had a lot of trouble with the last neighbour's pet and just wanted to avoid that this time.

I think animal control should be called only after you've made a neighbourly attempt to address the matter. Maybe it's just me but I think those kinds of services should be a last resort after reasonable and mature approaches have failed.

My neighbor's dog goes under the house and runs the streets and one day my neighbor was sitting on her porch watching her dog go to the bathroom across the street in my friend's yard. I said something to her about him getting out of the yard, she laughed and said something about how smart he was to go under the house to get some freedom. Ignorant people...

Anyways, a couple weeks later I'm taking my son to school and trash is torn up all over our street, he hadn't been in mine at that point. When I returned my trash was all over so I had a mess to clean up, needless to say I wasn't to happy. My last straw was when that same day when I went to pick my son up and the dog was 4 blocks away in a major street and the crossing guard was trying to corral the dog so he didn't get ran over. I went home wrote a note telling her the events of the day of her dog and told her that if I saw this again I was calling animal control. Now the dog is chained up in their back yard, of course it's right outside my window (her little dig at me I'm sure) but it's only the window to my laundry room. I sure hope her house sells soon.

Anyways, I'd say something to her and then if that doesn't help do what you have to do. Myself I was prepared to call animal control because he was making a nuisance of himself all over the neighborhood AND it appeared she didn't care one way or another. GOod luck!

Does your town have laws about dogs being fenced or restrained? If so, I would mention that fact to her acting as if she might not be aware of it. If not, I would just call animal control. If she lets her dog run, I can't believe she will be receptive to you suggesting that she doesn't do it. Not to mention that it might start everything off on the wrong foot. Do you have to give your name when you call animal control?
