Canadians traveling to the US

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2007: Canadians traveling to the US
By Trina~moderator on Monday, November 19, 2007 - 09:09 pm:

Does anyone know if pass ports or anything else is required for Canadians when traveling to the US and back?

By Colette on Monday, November 19, 2007 - 09:24 pm:

I think it is now. It was, and then they got backlogged and suspended it, but I think it's been re-inacted.

We can drive across without, but have to have one to fly. We have always had all of our birth certificates ready, but have only been asked once or twice.

I found this, for American citizens:

Western Hemisphere Travel

The Goal of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)

The goal of the Initiative is to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors by providing standardized, secure and reliable documentation which will allow the Department of Homeland Security to quickly, reliably and accurately identify a traveler.

Timeline

In the proposed implementation plan, the requirements outlined above will be rolled out in the following phases:

* On January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.

* As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

---------------------

Do I require a passport to travel to the U.S.?

Since January 23, 2007, a new American law requires everyone entering the United States BY AIR to have a valid passport.

Canadian citizens will not require a passport or other secure document to enter the United States at LAND AND MARINE ports of entry until summer 2008 at the earliest.

For further information, visit the Canadian Border Services Agency's Web site.
