Is anyone else...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2007: Is anyone else...
By Nicki on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 12:48 pm:

...having a hard time getting in the spirit of the holidays this year? I don't know what it is, perhaps it's because I'm in an area where the temperatures have been in the lower 70's with no rain. Not a drop in weeks. No cold mornings and only mildly colder at night. We have had a glorious fall, I'm not complaining. But, it's hard to believe Thanksgiving is next week, and my dd is so excited about getting our tree up soon after. It should help me to see all the Christmas decor for sale in the stores. I think it's been out most places for several weeks now. I should be out cleaning our shed and finding the Christmas stuff, but I'm stalling. I can't bear the thought of putting up the tree next Friday in my shorts and T-shirt. LOL
Anyone else?:-)

I'm with you, Nicki, but for different reasons. I remember packing the Xmas stuff up last year thinking that my family would be different this year. And it is....but I have to put my happy face on and make it a special holiday for the kids.

I can not stand that the stores have Christmas items up already. That drives me nuts. Can we do one holiday at a time? Even tv ads are pushing Xmas.

Bah humbug!

By Colette on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 01:14 pm:

((Annie)) I hope you and the kids can start some new traditions this year.

By Nicki on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 01:33 pm:

Annie, does it seem like they're putting the Christmas stuff out earlier? I remember when I was young we didn't see any anything out until the day after Christmas. It used to be exciting.
Hugs to you, Annie. Yes, I imagine the holidays are going to be hard for you. I have a dear friend who lost her husband this summer. She feels like you do. She said she'd like to skip things this year, but won't because of her granddaughters. She was always the one to have the family over on Christmas day. This year, her kids suggested they all go to a relatives cabin and spend the day together. I'm hoping she gets through it okay. I'll be thinking about you too, Annie. ((HUGS))

Well, I hate to admit that I already have my Christmas tree up. Okay, don't lynch me. It isn't decorated, just up. In my defense, Dh has to put it up, it is too heavy for me to do. He is too tired after work, and we are busy this weekend, out of town for Thanksgiving, and busy the next weekend. So, he put it up for me last weekend.

We are getting cooler weather, and gasp, maybe some snow over Thanksgiving. So, I am getting into the Christmas spirit.

Nicki, they are putting out Christmas stuff earlier. Hobby Lobby had their Christmas stuff out before Halloween.

Annie, I know the holidays will be hard. Here's too making new memories, and traditions!!

Maybe the older we get the faster time goes by. Seems like just yesterday the weather was in the 80's.

The holidays are always very busy for me. Beginning with my grandma's birthday on Oct. 15th, MIL's birthday on Oct. 16th, Halloween, then on Nov 5th my son's birthday, Thanksgiving, Dec. 3rd my birthday and Dec.6th my dad's birthday (which we usually celebrate together) then Christmas and then New Year's. I have also been involved in my son's school activities, already going on two field trips this year.

I got hit with vertigo in September and I still get woozy once in a while, usually when I am really tired. Last week I walked around feeling nauseous for 2 days before I figured out that it was a touch of motion sickness.

So I am not pushing myself this year. I am having Thanksgiving dinner at my house just because I don't want to drive out of state to visit extended family again and my MIL hasn't had it with us in 3 years. And I am only cooking for 6 people, so it's not that big a deal.

Having a rough year this year too, Annie. I so wish it was New Years Day already. I hate the holidays any more and I am so not financially ready this year. The girls want this and that and I don't have the heart to tell them it isn't going to happen.

Will be thinking of you Annie, we can sit around with our happy faces on together.. :(

I'm not in the mood. It was bad enough that Christmas starts retail wise the day after Thanksgiving. Now it's the day after Halloween. Maybe I'm not feeling it because it's not time yet! Walmart was playing carols early this month. I think Thanksgiving has cycled around a little earlier this year, but it could be my imagination. Alot of our Christmas decorations were ruined when our basement flooded this summer. I have a lot to do to finish up the semester, not much extra cash. Dd's birthday is 6 days before Christmas. Oh well.

Hugs Annie!

I'm excited about Christmas. My kids and I are all listening to Christmas music already.

By Tsa on Saturday, November 17, 2007 - 12:33 am:

I love Christmas. I have 2 of the 6--yes I said 6--trees up already. I start decorating November 1. My whole family gets into the spirit. My cards are addressed and stamped, I'm ready to roll. Bring on Black Friday.

By Karen~admin on Saturday, November 17, 2007 - 09:41 am:

Yes, Christmas stuff is out earlier this year in the stores. I am putting up my Christmas tree on Friday.

Normally, Thanksgiving triggers my inner *Christmas season* button, and really puts me into the spirit. Thanksgiving is a bit *early* this year, so that sort of changes things. DH and I have actually been in the malls the past 3 weekends, specifically looking at Christmas stuff, so I'm in the spirit. In fact, I have been listening to Christmas music all week at work this week and have addressed my Christmas cards, which, BTW, I have not sent out for YEARS! LOL

Also, we've had temps in the mid 80's in the last week or two, so I can relate to that as well.

I predict you will get into the spirit next weekend. You guys didn't know I was a fortune teller, huh? ROFL

I'm excited this year, but I think it's because of dd's age (almost 3 1/2). She is SO excited and it's like her first because she doesn't remember last year very well, so we're living through her.

We decorated this weekend and are already listening to Christmas music, too! About half of our shopping is done as well and that's the most exciting part. I will be ready to wrap gifts for under the tree next week, but I'll fight off the urge until after Thanksgiving at least!

Retail has been ridiculous though. Christmas stuff was up in the stores before Halloween here - not good IMO.

By Vicki on Saturday, November 17, 2007 - 04:10 pm:

For some really strange reason I am REALLY in the Christmas mood this year. If I wasn't having Thanksgiving at my house, I would be putting up my decorations now! I can't wait to get started on it next Friday. I have a few things bought, but not much at all. I have to get moving on that!

I think dh and I are going to put up the outside decorations tomorrow. Weather is supposed to be decent and I like having it all lit up when my Thanksgiving company leaves. Sorta starts the Christmas season!

By Happynerdmom on Saturday, November 17, 2007 - 04:46 pm:

Yeah, I'm having a hard time getting in the Holiday spirit, but I'm also of the camp that says it's too early! A local radio station is playing Christmas music, and I refuse to listen to it until after Thanksgiving! It's hard to believe it's almost Thanksgiving. I do think the warm weather lasting so long threw me off, too.

By Yjja123 on Saturday, November 17, 2007 - 05:45 pm:

I am done shopping. Shopping does not put me in the mood. The scents, sounds, and the excitment do.
We put up our tree this week. It has the cinnamon pinecones, cranberry & popcorn garland on it. We decorate it after Thanksgiving. I have decided the cinnamon pinecones are a scent I associate with the holidays. It brings me joy to walk in the house and smell it.
I do believe the stores push the holidays too early. I avoid the stores as much as possible right now anyway.
I have made an effort to have more Thanksgiving decorations. The only Christmas decoration in the house right now is the tree. We put up garland/lights on the outside but will not light them until after Thanksgiving. The rest of the decorations will go up then.
I am in the mood for the holidays. I love this time of year. We are finally cooling off and getting sweater weather. This is my FAVORITE time of year!

((((((Hugs Annie))))))

By Nicki on Saturday, November 17, 2007 - 08:00 pm:

Yvonne, do you scent your own pinecones or do you purchase them all ready scented? I haven't tried doing my own yet, but have always wanted to.
It sounds like some of us are very ready, (I'm envious!lol) and some of us not so.

Karen, I think it's so great you already have your cards done! You helped me remember that I was so disappointed I didn't get any out last year, so I'm going to work on those soon. I guess the shopping doesn't really do it for me, either, but I enjoy seeing the stores decorated later in the season. Seeing the decor out before Halloween this year gave me that Christmas in July sort of feeling. Reading some of these posts actually helped me see that doing for others really gets me in the spirit. I think I'm going to try and bake with dd this year so we can remember the neighbors and friends.

Hugs to those who are struggling with the holidays this year. I hope we are all able find peace and meaning in our own way.

By Yjja123 on Saturday, November 17, 2007 - 09:48 pm:

Yes, I scent them myself with the same oils I use to make candles.
