I think he has swimmers ear. His fever hasn't gone down and he's been crying in pain for a few hours so I don't want him to suffer all the way until whenever I could get him in the ped's tomorrow, or today I guess. He got this last spring and it became quite an ordeal. The first doc we saw made it sound like no big deal and gave anti-biotic drops. Two days later we were in the er and they were doing cat scans to make sure the infection hadn't gotten into his bones. His ear had swollen to the point they had to put a wic in it to get the drops to go in and he was put on tylenol 3. I really feel bad for him. The second doc we saw explained how horribly painful it is. Any little thing that touches his ear makes him scream. We're taking the kids on their first real trip this weekend too, and now we may not be able to go. I don't think the ocean and swimmers ear mix. :(

Poor thing, I can completely understand the pain of swimmers ear, it is not a minor issue, it is one of the most painful things I have ever experienced. I had a very severe case of swimmers ear twice in high school and all I could do was cry, I ended up in the er also and was given pain pills along with antibiotic ear drops. I am still prone to getting it and will often feel it starting, so I keep swimmers ear drops handy, you can buy them at Wal Mart and it does help prevent the infection from progressing. I try to use the drops every time I swim and shower. I hope he is feeling better soon, it really is a horrible thing to go through.

Poor thing. I hope he is feeling better today!

He is sleeping right now. They had to put in the cotton wick to get the anit-biotic drops in and gave him 2 doses of tylenol 3, enough for today if he needs it. He told me it didn't hurt when they put the wick in but it hurt a lot when they cleaned his ear. Dh said the dr was very kind. They said it would be ok to go to the ocean if he feels better and said he should. Ds said his ear felt much better but it burned if he hiccupped. I'm glad he;s getting some rest.

Rayelle when I took dd and ds to the doctor for swimmers ear he said that when they get out of the pool to put one drop of each alcohol and white vinager and so far (knock on wood) no more swimmers ear. I have to say it has helped my other 2 havn't had it since we started

My 9 yr old ds gets swimmers ear also and his ped said mix 1/2 rubbing alcohol and 1/2 white vinegar (like Shann's) and put drops in after swimming, leave them set a minute or so then turn head for it to come out. I keep it in a squeeze bottle and he knows when he needs it (water in ear after swimming) and just uses it. Haven't had an infection in almost 3 years. I carry this in our beach bag also so we always have it on hand. Have a nice vacation.

I'm so glad he is feeling better. I had problems with my ears as a kid, its the worst! Now after I swim I run the hair dryer in my ears, and then put cotton soaked in alcohol in my ears for about 10 minutes. Works every time!
