Banned Books Week

“Before the week is out, be a patriot: Encourage a child to fall in love with a book. Apply for a library card. And accept the ALA's invitation to Let Freedom Read.”—Linda Campbell, Star-Telegram Staff Writer, “Here's a novel thought: Don't restrict books”

By Dawnk777 on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 03:38 pm:

I don't restrict books, with my kids and my mom didn't restrict what I read, either. Although, reading after I was supposed to be in bed, was forbidden and I got caught a few times, with the light under the covers! LOL!

My kids love books and have since they were old enough to know what a book was!

I think the banned books week is a good idea. I never ban books. We are big readers in my house. My kids read daily, as do I. I read several books a week (fast reader).
We enjoy all kinds of books.

Thanks for posting this, Sunny. I'm with those who didn't much censor what my children were reading (other than Playboy and the like) once they were 12 or 13. And my parents didn't censor what I read. I, too, am an avid reader, as are my sons.

Dawn, my parents were home demonstrators and were often out in the evening when I was 11 or 12. My bedroom was at the back of the 2nd floor, so I could hear them come in. Eventually my dad got wise and started feeling my bed-table light bulb.

LOL! So you were a stinker, too, huh? LOL!

Moi??? I was my daddy's darlin' daughter - except when I stayed up too late reading in bed (or didn't clean my room, dated the wrong guy, married the wrong guy, ... you get the picture).

Ginny, that cracks me up about your dad checking the bulb! That is so funny!

I must admit, I've never been a reader but when I do find a book I like it doesn't hit the table until it is complete...regardless of meal times, sleep or laundry. And now with kids, I hate to neglect them that much, LOL. I am bad when it comes to liking a book, totally obsessed with getting to the end.

My DH is such a reader that sometimes he drives me nuts!! He reads at least 5 books a week, sometimes more. He carry's a book with him every where he/we go, and if something time consuming comes up ( I need to stop at a store) he just pulls out his book and waits patiently while he reads. His comprehension level is awesome! When he took his written test for his CDL license,he studied the book the night before ( not days in advance)and was finished with the test in 15 minutes! When he took it to the lady up frount, she said there was NO WAY he could be done that fast and made him go sit back down and look it over again. He did ,and returned it to her , and this time she got "quite snippy" :) When they graded it, he missed 2 questions out of 100 ! She couldn't believe it!!

Wow, good for him, Wanda! LOL! Pfft to the clerk who didn't believe him!
