Can we debate about....

Moms View Message Board: The Kitchen Table (Debating Board): Can we debate about....
By Groovepickle on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 10:12 am:

...having a new topic to debate about! I can't think of anything good.:)

By Alberobello on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 10:43 am:

I have so many, but haven't got the time to follow them up. Good luck on your quest!

Why don't you try bringing one of the old ones from this board below. There are some really good ones.

Hmmm...a good idea:)

I want something other than religeon, politics and parenting to debate about so I can learn something new. Everything else is getting old! :) Yet, I can't think of a single thing. Ginny... where are you? LOL!

Maybe a question or a few that everyone could answer so that we get to know each other better? What do you think?

By Ginny~moderator on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 06:20 pm:

I'm right here, and I have noticed that we haven't been having much debate about politics lately. (Not sure why, and given my "reputation", I'm not going to be the one to start any debate on politics.

Nor about religion. I have to say, though I have joined in the discussions about religious perspectives most of the time, I don't really like "debating" about what people believe. I do like discussing it and throwing out different perspectives, but faith is such an important personal thing, I don't want to run the risk of criticizing people for what they deeply believe.

Parenting - that's another touch issue to debate, because, again, it is so personal. My personal preference is to keep parenting discussions on the parenting board, and keep them to asking/offering advice and sharing good/bad times.

(Alyssa, I respectfully suggest that the "debate" board is not the best place to try to get to know each other better - though that often happens. I frequently see questions on the general board that are focused towards learning more about our members, and think that's a better place for such explorations.)

Possible topics: (many of them political)

Health care - cost, management, how it is paid for, are there better systems or better ways? (Did you know that approximately 15% of our annual gross national product is spent on health care?)

Price of prescription drugs - why do you think drugs cost less in Canada than in the U.S. What can be done about the high price of drugs? Should the government's new Medicare Prescription plan have a clause that forces negotiation of prices? Should the insurance companies be allowed to pick and choose which drugs they will pay for (in the Medicaid plan and in any health insurance plan)?

Flood control / flood insurance. It is reported that many people who pay for flood insurance rebuild in the same place where they were flooded out, and lots of them file claims every time they are flooded. Should people be allowed to rebuild in a flood plain? If they do, should they be allowed to buy flood insurance? (Remember, flood insurance is a federal government program and is not only not profit-making, it usually shows a loss which is made up out of tax dollars.)

Should we reinstitute the draft? If we do, what about requiring everyone to serve a year or two years of community/government service some time between their 20th and 30th birthdays (after they graduate from wherever they are going to school)?

Unions - good? bad? in what ways? what is your experience?

Clothing styles. I suggest this because I am personally appalled by the kinds of clothing that seem to be most fashionable/acceptable for young women today - starting at age 7 or 8.

Where do you get your news? And why is that your preference?

What is your definition of "liberal", "conservative"? (And, how do you define yourself and why?)

What is a "good" age for boys and for girls to start dating? Group dating or couple dating? Why?

Add to my list: Reality TV shows, and what I consider the general "dumbing down" of television, from what I see of the offerings. (Note: I don't have cable, so I get about 6 general broadcast stations plus a couple of public television stations.)

I thought about one but as i said before i really haven't got the time now to follow it, but what about: is beauty a talent? You know like when someone's beautiful and then they don't look after themselves, is that such a bad thing? is beauty a talent in the way that it has to be cared for?

I don't know if i make it sound clear. Just a thought.

I like the one about clothing styles Ginny, it's light and easy to follow.

Also, one of the comments on another thread - the one about Rodney something- it was about the US going to free other countries and those countries not being grateful or something like that. Let me go and check it. I think that is definetely something to debate about: America's foreing neoliberalists policies.

Ginny always has great ideas!

By Alberobello on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 06:58 pm:

It is this one, from the Andy Rooney thread:

"My father and grandfather didn't die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come over and disrespect ours".

I am sorry...but, excuse me???

By Alberobello on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 07:03 pm:

And this is the other one:

"We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms, so that decades later they could come over here and tell us our constitution is a living document; and open to their interpretations".

I am sorry, but the phrase "to defend their freedoms" needs revising in that sentence... Not all of the interventions of the US have been altruistic or have had a positive result for that matter.

Another thought...
