Russel l Yates

Moms View Message Board: The Kitchen Table (Debating Board): Russel l Yates
By Annie2 on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 11:04 pm:

I have yet to see this man distraught.

His mentally ill wife, mother of his five babies, (which he left alone...knowing her condition and ignoring tremendous warning signs), drown their kids, he went to their funeral, in court with wife, talking after the trial...etc.

He seems so "matter of fact". I, as the spouse, would be a wet cottonball by now.

In my opinion, this guy is hiding something...

What do you think?

By Bea on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 11:49 pm:

Whether or not he is hiding anything I hold this jerk as responsible as his wife, if not more so, for the death of his children. He knew of her Postpartum Depression and couldn't keep it in his pants. It takes two to make babies. He knew that having babies made his wife mentally unbalanced. He shares the blame, but walks off Scott free.

By Truestori on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 01:16 am:

He is considered the enabler in my book. They both suffer from some type of mental illness.
There are way to many sick individuals in this world for me. This is just a sad situation all together! :(

By Karen55 on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 09:59 am:

I'm with you Bea. I've done a lot of thinking about all of this the last couple of days. Don't get me wrong, she IS guilty, and I don't see her mental illness as an excuse, but he should have taken some responsibility here; why would a man continue to impregnate a woman who he KNOWS has PPD, who is virtually solely responsible for caring for those kids ALL day without him? Where was he when all of this is happening in his home? You cannot live with someone, especially someone who is having emotional problems or is depressed, and NOT notice something is wrong, especially when there is a house full of kids there?!? And he did nothing to help them all? I think more is wrong with this picture than simply her PPD; *someone* should have intervened long before things got to this point.

By Kim on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 11:34 am:

I agree with all of you, find it strange also that he never seems upset.....

By Jann on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 12:24 pm:

Perhaps he is numb.

He had been under a gag order since the beginning of the trial. Prior to that he did speak to the press quite a bit. He was fairly hostile towards the medical community and health insurance industry during his press conference yesterday.

By Debbie on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 06:03 pm:

There was a very large article in our paper this morning. I was appauled at some of the things in the article and some of the things that he said after the sentencing. He actually had the nerve to say that he was offended that the courts had charged his wife for anything because of her mental instability. He thinks she should have been set free. When asked if he felt somewhat responsible, he said that his only duty was to get his wife medical help which he did. However, he states that he knew that the treatment she was getting was not helping. He also had the nerve to state that she got better the first time she was sick with ppd, but that the doctor would not give her the same treatment. Why didn't HE fight to get her this same treatment.

The final kicker for me. When asked if he plans to stay married to Andrea. He actually hesitated and had the nerve to say. I don't know what the future holds. It is just very difficult to be seperated from my wife and TO NOT BE ABLE TO HAVE ANY MORE CHILDREN WITH HER. I swear this man is a nut. If Andrea Yates had not been charged with anything, I bet you a million bucks she would be having another baby in 10 months.

I am just so sickened by this whole situation.

By Ginnyk on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 03:54 pm:

In the article in my local paper the reporter said that Yates is thinking about suing Andrea's doctors. Boy am I surprised. Not!!!!

By Sunny on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 04:31 pm:

It makes sense, though, that he wants to sue the doctors. If he can continue to put the blame on others, then he doesn't have to face up to his part in the deaths of his kids. I doubt the man will ever admit that he made mistakes, and the biggest mistake he made was not protecting those kids.

By Debbie on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 05:49 pm:

I watched him and his mother on the Today Show and then Good Morning America had Andrea Yates's family. Gosh, I feel for them. They said that they continually talked with Russell Yates about the severity of Andrea's condition and getting her help. They are just heartbroken. They talked about how controlling he was.

He is such a jerk. I just can't stomach to watch him. He is sueing the doctors. Ginny you nailed it on that one.

By Colette on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 08:41 pm:

Ginny your bet was right on the money! I saw he is thinking of suing. The man is disgusting. If anyone should have seen the warning signs that she was at the end of her rope it should have been him.

By Barbara on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 09:20 pm:

Something that disturbed me at the announcement of Andrea Yates sentencing it was said that Andrea would never again have children....someone asked Russell if he would ever have more children and he answered YES.....excuse me I thought he was going to stand by his wife....

Here is my scenario
She goes to prison, he sues the DRs and wins then he divorces her and within 2 years....there is a new Mrs. Russell Yates...I think this jerk needs to stay with Andrea...in the cell next to her!

By Jewlz on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 10:21 pm:

i agree with barbara so much i see this happening and have seen this repeat ( not so drastic) in the towns i have lived in .... this is so scarry that it is allowed to continue and so many lives are messed up ....

By Jewlz on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 - 01:02 pm:

im not sure what its called but didnt oj's wifes parents sue for some money .... couldnt her parents sue the same way and get some of the details out of what was really going on with him and hold him responsible for neglecting her and controlin her to the point that she couldnt think straight ?

By Melanie on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 - 01:16 pm:

Barbara, I agree with you 100%!!!

Jewlz-that was a Wrongful Death suit. I don't know what criteria needs to be met for that suit to be brought against him. Perhaps Ginny knows????

By Ginnyk on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 - 05:08 pm:

I have been mulling this over - infliction of emotional distress - I just don't know. What the parents could sue for - that's a tough one. Or even, what Andrea could sue for. I really don't know if there is any basis on which her parents could sue, but I will ask.

Now Russel - he would sue as the sole heir of the dead children. Because Andrea killed them, she cannot "profit" from their death, but he can - bless his pointy little head. The only good thing is that if he sues he may find a whole lot of stuff coming out in evidence that hasn't come out so far, which might open some eyes as to his role in this whole thing.

By Debbie on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 - 09:33 pm:

Ginny, I was thinking the exact same thing. Russel seems to contradict himself. First, I heard him say that he blames the doctors because she wasn't getting better. However, when asked why he would leave his children alone with her when she was so ill, he says that she was improving the last few months????

I think that if he files a lawsuit, things would come out that would show his responsibility in this.
