Green Day - American Idiot

Moms View Message Board: The Kitchen Table (Debating Board): Green Day - American Idiot

Green Day

I put this here because I thought it might be a bit controversal. :)

Has anyone heard the song or seen the video? (You can watch the video on the website.) Any comments on it?

I could do without the profanity, but otherwise I really like this song. I especially like the beat and tend to agree with the message. I'm curious to hear other opinions. :)

Edit: Don't watch the video with the kids around. It is not censored.

I've ALWAYS loved Green Day as a band, since I was about 14. I have to say that I somewhat agree with what they are saying, but truthfully - I'd rather be too paranoid about nothing than not be fully prepared for a "big something". KWIM?

For those of you who can't understand the lyrics on the video, here they are (btw, I couldn't understand half of them, and I've been listening to Green Day for 10 years, LOL):

Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new media.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mind-f*&$ America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the idiot nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For thats enough to argue.

Well maybe I'm the fa&&ot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the idiot nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For thats enough to argue.

Don't wanna be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information Age of hysteria.
It's going out to idiot America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the idiot nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For thats enough to argue.

I used to like Green Day. We have one of their CD's (Dookie) from what- 10 years ago? We pulled it out a few weeks ago because we haven't heard it in a long time. Our 7-yr-old son LOVED it. I HATED it. I read the words, probably because I couldn't understand the singing. It's a good thing for my ds that you can't understand the singing! The lyrics are full of profanity (some of it he understands) and they sing about leading a loser life as if it were the American Dream. We haven't heard it in a long time because my ds accidentally left it in my mom's CD player and we haven't gotten it back. I hope she doesn't listen to it. :(

As for the American Idiot, I can see by the website that they are anti-Bush, anti-war, pro-gay-rights, extreme left obnoxious liberals. Unfortuanately, thanks to dial up, I didn't get to see the video, but I read the lyrics (thanks Amy) The only thing that I agree with is the line "One nation controlled by the media." The media in this country do NOT report the news in any objective manner whatsoever. The only idiot is one who believes everything he/she hears from the mainstream media. Who isn't tired of the liberal spin of Couric/Laurer, Jennings, Brokaw, etc.? Don't you think that, given that this is a country of free speech, that there ought to be other opinions that should be heard? Is it any wonder why FOX News is now the nation's number one news outlet?

As for the "age of paranoia", I take this to mean the threat of terrorism. To this, I have only this to say- Russia gets it. If you didn't get it after 9/11, what more will it take?

Thanks for the opportunity to offer my opinion! I love a good debate, but it's hard to find the time. I am still waiting for a response to my post on the abortion ban ;)
