Got this email...just wondered you thoughts??

Moms View Message Board: The Kitchen Table (Debating Board): Got this email...just wondered you thoughts??
By Vicki on Monday, August 2, 2004 - 12:12 pm:

I got this in an email this monring and found it interesting. Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts about it!!

Sen. John Kerry keeps talking about U.S.
corporations leaving this country and setting up
shop in foreign countries, taking thousands of jobs with them. He is right, because that has happened. However, he is trying to blame it on George W. Bush.

As far as I know, Bush hasn't moved one factory out of this country because he is not the owner of a single factory. That cannot be said about Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz-Kerry. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Kerry's own 32 factories in Europe and 18 in Asia and the Pacific. In addition, their company, the Heinz Company, leases (4) factories in Europe and (4)in Asia. Also, they own (27) factories in North America, some of which are in Mexico and the Caribbean. 80% of Heinz products are made overseas. I wonder how many hundreds of
American workers lost their jobs when these plants relocated in foreign countries. I also wonder if the workers in Mexico and Asia are paid the same wages and benefits as workers
in the United States. Of course they're not.

However, Kerry demands that other companies that relocate should pay the same benefits they did in the U.S Why does he not demand this of the Heinz Company, since he is married to the owner? If Kerry is elected, will he and his wife close all those foreign factories and bring all those jobs back to America? Of course they won't. They're making millions off that cheap labor.

I always question these kinds of emails and check sites that I trust to see if it is true or not. :)

I got that email too a few weeks ago. Though definitely not a fan of Kerry i'll speak up by saying Theresa doesnt own the Heinz company, she just made $500 Million by marrying a Heinz man. I dont think companies moving overseas has anything to do with Bush or anyone else. They just want the cheap labor and will do what they have to do to get it. JMO

Oh well good lord it never even dawned on my mind to check it out because of who it came from!! Just goes to show you that you can't trust anything that you read!! Thanks for setting me straight on this one!!

I don't have an opinion about whether these things are true or false at this point because so many lies and rumors go around during any election, so are true but so much gets added and you just sight of any part of it...my question is that the web sites that get posted saying they are false...what makes them so true? I want to know what the sources are for this site and why we should believe them anymore than the emails? I mean half the things that come right out of the mouth of presidents are not true either. I just see so many people say they heard this or that or read whatever and then someone else comes along with a website disproving it. What the heck is the difference?

The difference, IMO, is that it takes so little to start a rumor and most people are apt to believe what is told to them. Rumors also spread like wildfire, while the truth lags behind, sometimes never catching up. I'll never forget growing up and hearing a rumor that Mikey from the Life cereal commercial died after eating Pop Rocks, or that Rod Stewart had to have his stomach pumped after a sexual act (and the list goes on). I had no reason to doubt the authenticity of these rumors, after all, people who I trusted told it to me, and I had no way to prove or disprove them! I'm still apt to believe what someone tells me, especially if it is someone who has never given me a reason to doubt them, but those childhood urban legends did help me to become a lot more skeptical and I personally need a questioning statement to be proved before I believe it.

Snopes is one of my favorite sites about urban legends because they list their sources at the bottom of the page. It's as if someone else has done the work for me and I tend to believe what they say.

I was wondering the same thing Kenna. Who pays these sites to "tell the truth"? There are things that i've researched on Snopes that I have a hard time believing. Thats why I look for an abundance of the same answer and go by that. Heck, I could start my own urban legends site today and post "the truth".

So does anyone know what makes these sites trustworthy? I know there are a few women on here that swear by these sites.

By Ginny~moderator on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 01:27 am:

One of the factors which causes me to trust Snopes is that they post their sources or references, so that you can check the same sources or references. I tend generally to distrust emails or internet "information" (or newspaper information) that doesn't give the sources for the information.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 02:07 am:

I agree with Ginny on the Snopes. And did you ever play that game where you start a secret and the next person whispers it in the next ear and then the next and when it gets to the last they are supposed to repeat what was said by the very first person? They never have it right because as it goes down the line people drop and add words and turn around the story all together. A truth can turn into fiction really quickly when being spread about by word of mouth or email in this case. And many of those chain emails could bring up all kinds of trouble in the wrong hands.

By Sunny on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 12:38 pm:

According to the Snopes site, no one pays them to "tell the truth" Snopes FAQ

But, that's part of what makes this country so great. You can believe whatever you want to believe.
