Moms View Message Board: Prayer Requests: Prayers for my grandfather please
By Tunnia on Friday, February 9, 2007 - 05:19 pm:

Please pray for my Grandpa. He has been battling esophagal (sp?) cancer for several months now and was showing progress. However, last night we got the phone call that the cancer has now spread to his brain.:( Dh and I got off work and our dks are out of school for two days on the 19th and 20th so we are going to go see him next weekend. It's a 14 hour drive for us and we just couldn't get away this weekend.:( He is a wonderful man and this is so hard. Would you also pray for my Grandma. She is a strong woman, but this is a lot for her to bear. Thank you!

I'll pray for your safety as you drive and that your grandpa and grandma will have some sense of peace in all of this pain. I'm so sorry to hear about this bad news. {{{Tunnia}}}

Thanks again for your prayers. Please continue to keep my Grandpa and Grandma in your thoughts and prayers.

We drove the nearly 1000 miles to see him last weekend and ended up extending our stay until Wednesday so that we could spend a little extra time with him. They have stopped treating the tumor in his throat and are only treating the tumors in his brain. The tumors have shrunk some so that he has gained some of his functions back on a limited scale, but they will never completely go away. Because the radiation is working to some extent the doctor has given him 6 months to live rather than the original 2 weeks. Still the doctor says that 6 months is an average. It could be 2 months, 4 months, 8 months.... This is a one-shot deal and once the treatment is complete next week he will be sent home to live out his remaining time. My grandmother is so very thin. She's not eating much and she spends every day with him. She gets up between 4am and 5am, gets ready and then leaves to spend the day with him not coming home until just before dark (she won't drive after dark). She is a strong woman, but she is driving herself hard to spend as much time with him as possible. I understand why, but I'm worried about her.

We all enjoyed our time with him and were so glad that we had the chance to go see him although we would have liked more time. I made sure that we took lots of pictures. My 6yo ds gave Grandpa his lucky dime "to remember me by" and both kids gave him pictures they drew for him to put on the wall next to his bed at the nursing home where he is staying during treatment and we gave him a framed photo of our family (my parents, my brother and his ds, and me, dh, and our dks) to keep on his bedside table. We all talked about old times and gave him lots of hugs and kisses. I did fine until the night before we left when it really hit me that I have, in all probability, seen my Grandpa alive for the last time. I have been very practical about the whole thing, but the realization that I will never see him again was very, very hard.

If you've made it this far, thank you for letting me ramble. It makes me feel better to "talk" about Grandpa and my feelings since this is the first time in my life I have had to face the decline and eventual death of someone I am close to and dearly love.:(

I am so sorry that you and your family are going thru this. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I am glad you got to spend someitme with him. I know this is hard on your Grandma but she needs this time with him. I can't even imagine how hard it is to watch someone that you have shared a life with going thru this and the only thing you can do is watch and be there by their side.
