Flylady-zone 2 the master bedroom!

Moms View Message Board: Get Organized: Flylady-zone 2 the master bedroom!
By Kaye on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 12:21 am:

So this is one of the worst rooms in my house. It is mostly due to laundry every where. But it gets the stash and dash too. I do make my bed daily, but it isn't the kitchen sink to me. So do you keep your room clean? Any hints for what made that work? Before flylady I would have laughed at the notion that if the sink is clean the rest will follow theory. But it works for me. BUT I can't find my bedroom sink, if you know what I mean. Anyway, just curious :)

By Dana on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 09:32 am:

I try really hard to avoid putting things on any flat surfaces in my bedroom (I wish DH had the same theory). I do my best to avoid stashing anything under the bed (again, wish DH felt this way). My bed, well, it does not get made every morning. DH is the last out of it and I don't bother after he leaves.

I also have a hard time keeping my room clean. My downstairs stays pretty good, thanks to Flylady, but I'm with you...I do get my bed made most mornings, but it is not my "kitchen sink." I think it doesn't work as well because I'm not in my bedroom all the time. KWIM? The kitchen you see all the time. I will say, when I'm keeping up with the laundry, (I try to do at least one load every day)my room stays much cleaner. Oh, well. Baby steps! I'm just thrilled that someone could come over any time and my downstairs would be presentable! They just can't come into my bedroom. (Okay, or my laundry room! LOL)

By Conni on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 12:16 pm:

My problem isnt with the clutter its with deep cleaning...:(

We only have one small dresser that I cant lay much on anyway. lol We have an armoire that is too tall to lay things on top of so thats easy.
Our TV covers the top of the chest of drawers that sits in there too.
And the nightstand is on dh's side of the bed, so i am never over there to lay stuff.

My *sink* for my bdrm is having the bed made. If my bed isnt made I dont feel like cleaning up anything else in my room.

Probably another thing that helps me keep my room decluttered is that my bdrm is off of the living room. So if someone drops by--i like to have my things picked up. But that does not mean my bdrm has been vacuumed, dusted, blinds cleaned, cieling fan cleaned, mirrors cleaned, etc... All it means is that if they glance in my room it appears picked up. lol Oh and my bathrrom and closet are usually pretty bad. Dh never puts anything away on his side of the bathroom. The closet looks like a shoe store exploded in it ALL the time. I have GOT to get RID of some SHOES!!!

By Conni on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 08:43 pm:

Kaye, how'd it go today in the mstr bdrm? Did you fling some things or do a mission or room rescue?

I am still working on my weekly home blessing hour. There is no way I Can get it done in 1 hr. :( I dont get it. Maybe I dont move fast enough?

By Tink on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 08:48 pm:

Our phone lines were down for two days and I got so much cleaning done! LOL It's amazing what I can accomplish when I don't have this to distract me. I had packed up all the Christmas decor but stashed it in our room because so much of it goes in some antique trunks in our bedroom. I also got my biggest hotspot cleared up finally. It is a beautiful baker's rack in our kitchen that gets piled with paperwork, DH's magazines, dks' artwork and on and on. I've been dreading this for a couple of months and it took me less than 45 minutes to completely clear off. I really need to clear out the bookcase that we have in our room. I don't know what to do with all of these books though! I have them double stacked on most of the shelves.

Cleaning the bedroom gets done when I do the rest of the WHB. I just run in there with the duster and vacuum when I do the rest of the house. I don't think it adds more than 5 or 10 minutes to my routine. Cleaning the blinds only gets done 3 or 4 times a year here, as I notice it needs doing.

By Kaye on Wednesday, January 26, 2005 - 09:45 am:

I did two room rescues in there yesterday. I washed a lot of laundry and that is where it all ends up. But I also got dirty laundry out of there and a bag of trash. I can get it clean in about an hour, depending on the laundry, but just struggle keeping it clean. I will say though it is much better than it used to be. I have nothing undert he bed, the closets are clean and the flat surfaces only have clocks and candles :) My room is right off the living room too, so I just close the door ALOT! I also find I stash more in this room because of that. I walk it with a handful of what nots and set it down in my room. Also I have a very large bedroom, so it is very nice clean, but very easy to miss a pile here, because you don't have to step over it..LOL. Our first bedroom in a rent house we literally only had 2 ft on each side of the bed and then maybe a 1 ft walk way between the dresser and the foot of the bed. If there was a pile of laundry on the floor then you couldn't get to bed.

As for an hour home blessing. I have found I really have to set my timer. I have to make it a game. And I changed my routine from hers. I have to do a 10 minute pick up before I start. I do this, then sit down and check email. THEN I do bathrooms, this takes me every bit of 10 mintues, more the first week. I am better about keeping them clean and getting them done. This means I scrub the toilet, wipe the floor right around, wipe the sink, and wipe the light switch. It means I don't mop or vacuum that floor. I do that when I do the rest of the room. I change sheets, this takes me 10 mintues. I empty trashcans, I can do this in about 5 mintues. Then I take a break. Then I mop and sweep the kitch (takes much longer). So at this point I am at about 40 mintues, sometimes longer. I spend 10 minutes dusting. If you dust weekly, you really can get it done. Also I only dust the family room and my bedroom that often. And then I vacuum. I will sometimes alternate upstairs and downstairs and only get them vacuumed every other week. It is far from perfect, but it is a great start and really alot more effective cleaning then it used to be.

I scrubbed the bathtub/tiles in our master bath last night, and cleaned the counter. We have hard water, and I had some staining to deal with, so I used some of the CLR stuff, and it looks so much better - I even put up a new shower curtain liner!

By Conni on Wednesday, January 26, 2005 - 02:01 pm:

Woohooo!!! :)I am impressed Kaye!! I may have to try that CLR.

I did clean my shower and toilet area yesterday. Of course I had to clean the sinks/counters/mirrors over again because of dh's major nose bleed yesterday morn. ewwwwww... Today I need to sweep/mop the floors in there and clean my light fixtures they are yukky.

I dusted and vacuumed my bdrm yesterday. T

oday I will take a bag in there and throw away 27 items from under the bed and my dresser... Then I am *planning* to clean the ceiling fan that should be a french country white--but it looks kind of gray/black! LOL I am pretty tired of cleaning tho, so i am not sure if that will happen or not.

I had to take Blake to the doctor this morning he has a ringworm that will not go away. Then it was off to the vet with the puppy because i thought she had a ringworm too now--but they werent sure that it was. We got some med's anyway just to be safe. :( Then it was off to the pharmacy (again), seems like I am there for something every week. I feel really broke today for some reason?? Oh I know why!! Its because I AM BROKE! argh

Ok, happy cleaning everyone! Have a good day!!

I have trouble with our Master Bedroom as well. My biggest problem is my desk. Major hot spot!!! But I've done well this week in the zone. My desk is clear and I even vacuumed under the bed! I've done the missions all week. Sometimes I swear she has a camera in my house and tailors the missions just for me! LOL. I feel good about what I've accomplished this week. And I must admit, reading these posts does help!! :)

By Kaye on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 11:28 am:

Melanie, I agree, it is amazing at how she can "see" my house. I laughed when the email about holiday decorations went out. I got mine taken down and placed them in the hall by the closet and they sat there for weeks. I saw the mission and thought oh yeah, i should do that. I didn't...oops. I did get them put away yesterday.

Today is a big cleaning day at my house. I am doing my home blessing, 15 in my zone, some laundry time. And I am going to rearrange my son's room...long story, but it NEEDS done TODAY!

By Conni on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 02:40 pm:

Cleaned under the bed--found an awesome quilt my dh's grandmother made in 1947 I think is what it said. Looks brand new and is so pretty. I pulled it out and am going to have to get a quilt rack or something to put it on. I cant believe we were hiding that under the bed.

Found 2 journals in the nightstand that I had completely forgotten about!! Boy today was like Christmas at my house. LOL!

By Kaye on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 03:23 pm:

I found the missing game boy under my son's bed! He had cleaned his room, and I even helped. It was not until I literally moved his bed did I find the game boy. I really shouldn't store anything under his bed!

By Melanie on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 04:29 pm:

Wow, sounds like there have been some great finds today!!

The mission today was to clear the top of the dresser. Since I had done that earlier in the week I decided to go into my drawers. I easily accomplished the 27 fling boogie in there! Even though I have been a fluttering fly baby for quite some time, it never ceases to amaze me how much I can accomplish in a short time. I've been wanting to do this for quite a while and kept putting it off. Why???? LOL.

By Palmbchprincess on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 11:12 pm:

Hey everyone... I haven't been online too much lately, I'm still not feeling well. I'm glad everyone has been getting their missions done! I'm WAY behind, but I'm going to start fresh, and try this again! The master bedroom isn't too bad for me, except the computer desk and the top of the dresser. I guess I'll get to that tomorrow!

By Conni on Friday, January 28, 2005 - 09:59 am:

Hope you get to feeling better Crystal! I didnt know you were sick. I was wondering where you were.

By Palmbchprincess on Friday, January 28, 2005 - 11:52 am:

Thanks Conni. Between not sleeping and a short cold it was miserable, but I finally got a good night's sleep, and everyone is healthy again. Back to my routines!
