Moms View Message Board: Let's Get Fit! (Weight Loss Support Group): Topamax for Weight loss and Migraines and Paind
By Feona on Saturday, May 22, 2010 - 06:54 am:

I am taking this drug for Pain and I lost a few pounds. I was talking to the doctors and other people and it is common drug to be given to people for weight loss.

It seems to have no side effects that are noticable.

Read about it online. I am sure death is a possible side effect though.

Did you lose any weight on the topamax?

I know someone else on it for weight loss since she is on seroquel ( which gives you the munches) She might be on it for pain too.

And i know another person who is obese who is on it for weight loss and maybe something else too.

No - not really. I was on too many meds at once so went off a bunch just to save money. Couldnt afford them all. Anti depressants, migraine med, all of it! I just started taking my Thyroid med & restless leg med again since I finally had some extra money to pay for them. I would like to get back on all of them - need it right now - under WAAAAY too much stress!

The downside:
Topamax was originally for seizure disorders (had an older child that it was given to for seizure related issues). They used to test liver function regularly. It can bring on seizures. It can also have a not good relationship with liver and kidneys. Can also reduce effectiveness of some birth control. But it does reduce bingeing (that is documented).

They don't test liver regularly now.

Xenical is also given for weight loss. Alli is the OTC version of that.
