Anyone own a touring/commuter bike that they love that didn't cost a fortune. I have an old gearless bike but thats not going to cut it here so I'm browsing for a bike. All suggestions welcome.
I'm hoping to ride to the local beach with my little guy during the summer. I also want a front and back light and fenders and a chain guard.

You're right, biking is a big tourist activity here. People from all over the world come here in droves for at least three seasons to bike. There are even fall foliage bike tours and even a couple of major triathalons I have no such ambitions, I do want a bike with gears, fenders, a mud guard, a front and rear headlight, panier bags, a grocery basket and lightweight. Unfortunately Americans don't seem to be producing bike versions of "family sedans". Only the Dutch and Germans seem to be in that business. I'm on the look out for a European commuter bike bargain. All suggestions welcome.

Do you like the beach board walk bikes? Old fashioned. I don't know what they are called. Three speed I think.

They ride them here on the board walks.

You probably need an all terain bike?

Well my bicycling friend visited here - she thinks I need a fitness hybrid ( I think that means mountain and fitness) - I want one thats that but still sits upright like a touring bike. I don't like the skinny seats or the men's cross bars. I want fenders and baskets.
