Natale started Zytrec 3-4 weeks ago. I've really noticed a difference and she hasn't had a runny nose since then. Then all of a sudden yesterday in the middle of the store her eyes and nose just started running and she complained of not feeling good. She's had a runny nose ever since and seems pretty congested. I gave her the usual dose of Zyrtec lastnight at bedtime and it didn't seem to help her a bit. She was up several times throughout the night with runny nose and eyes and she's also very hoarse.

What's up with the Zyrtec? It's like it just stopped working from one minute to the next. She hasn't missed a dose since she began taking it. I'm wondering if I will have to take her back in for something different? Maybe if she had been on it for a year or two and it just stopped working I would understand, but it has barely been a month. Any thoughts?? TIA

Well, I am on Allegra, and most days I am fine. But, when my triggers(tree pollen) are REALLY high, I still have some minor problems. They are actually very high right now, and it has been very windy here. So, I am a mess this morning after going to my ds's baseball game last night. I have eye drops that I use for times like this. And, usually within a few days it passes.

Also, could she possibly have a cold?

I would just keep an eye on her for the next day or so.

Thanks Debbie. It was VERY windy here yesterday and we were out and about quite a bit. I have no idea what she's allergic to. I also have allergies but I'm ignorant about them. :) I know that they bug me in the spring for a week or two and then again in the fall for about the same amount of time. I've never seen a doc for them, I just take Claritin OTC and go from there, so I'm really clueless in general.

Benadryl really seems to be helping her dry up a bit and tolerate the stuffiness more. I gave her that tonight instead of the Zyrtec. I'll take your advice and just watch and see what happens. Your story about the wind is helpful. It was awful yesterday. Thank you. :)

Deanna, I just saw this thread, and as an allergy sufferer, I just wanted to add that it's very common to find triggers in stores. Consider this: There are towels, clothing, sheets, comforters - basically anything that is fabric and dyed - those are HUGE triggers for me. Sometimes I can walk into a store that sells those items and immediately I begin to have symptoms.

How was she after she was removed from that particular setting? How was she the following day?

Yes, wind stirs up the pollen and makes the symptoms worse. Are her allergies really always this bad? At 2-1/2, I doubt they would consider an allergy test for the poor girl, but as soon as possible, if she is still this miserable, I would get her in and get her started on shots. Otherwise, it's going to be a long miserable road for her.

It may just be a matter of looking for the right antihistamine. The only one that I have found that works for me is Chlor-trimeton, and after all the years I have had allergies, I just found this out last fall. I had to make sure to ge tthe 12-hour pills because when I took the 4-hour pills they wore off in the middle of the night and I woke up with a runny nose.

I don't know if doctors still do this, but when I was a kid, before I got tested, my doctor gave me a shot of antihistamine that seemed to take care of me for about a month.

Thanks Karen! My mom said the same thing about stores! It DID start after we walked by the candle section at Kohl's, but then lasted a few days. She's been fine since.

Cocoa- The Zyrtec that she takes daily has helped from day one of taking it, until this incident on a VERY windy day *and* going by the candle section, so it's hard to tell which one was the trigger. It lasted a few days like I said, and then she's been fine ever since.

Thanks ladies!
