Distended Bladder? (kinda long)

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Distended Bladder? (kinda long)
By Latonya on Friday, December 1, 2006 - 08:26 pm:

Does anyone know anything about this? I spent 7 hours at the ER today with Christopher(youngest DS, 3 yrs.) and this was their diagnosis. We were in the car with my parents and he told me he had to pee pee. We are trying to potty train him but I put a pull up on him while we were out today and I told him it was OK to pee pee in it but he just kept saying he had to pee pee. Then we stopped and I went in to make my insurance payment and my mom came in a couple of minutes later with him and he was crying so loud so I took him to the restroom and put him on the potty and he tried to pee. He squeezed and squeezed but nothing happened. So I called his Dr and she said take him the ER right now. They did xrays and a CT scan and did a catheder 3 times. The second time they got 310 cc's out. The doc said that on the CT scan his bladder was extended up as high as his hips. I could not believe it. He hasn't had any problems or symptoms. It was so sudden. He has to go to a specialist next week to have it checked out better. He is doing better now and has been able to pee pee on his own a few times. I am so worried about him. He was such a trooper today. He was so good even when they were hurting him and he was so still for the CT scan. After they got his bladder empty he started playing with me and DH. He seems to feel OK now but they said if he started to hurt again to bring him back and they will do another catheder and drain his bladder. They wanted me to do it at home if he needed one but I am not a nurse and have never done anything like that and I guess if I absolutely had to I could but I would much rather the hospital do it. They are trained for that stuff. Anyway TIA for reading this. I know it is long. Please send out good thoughts for him. And again TIA.

I don't have any experience but I'm so sorry that you and Christopher are dealing with this. It sounds awful. Please let us know how he does tonight. What a brave kid!

Poor kiddo! Did they test for a urinary tract infection or a blockage? Sounds like he felt the need to urinate but couldn't for some reason. I hope he's feeling better, and please let us know what the specialist says. {{{Christopher}}}

That sounds terribly painful. I have never heard of that. Did they know what caused it?

Thanks everyone! He seems to be feeling a little better today. He keeps saying his pee pee hurts. The dr. doesn't know what caused it or why it happened so fast. She said something like this usually happens over a period of time and there are symptome I would have noticed. Yes they checked for infection and everything was clean. There was possibly a blockage that came out with the 2 catheder and thats why he pee peed so much with that one. I also think his pee pee hurts because of all that stuff yesterday. So far no more crying about anything hurting and going potty OK today.

I'm sure it hurts from the catheter being in and out a few times. It's not the nicest feeling. I'm glad he's feeling better.
