He's not eating

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: He's not eating
By Enchens on Wednesday, November 29, 2006 - 05:00 pm:

My 2nd ds is 1.5 years old. He was sick 2 weeks ago so he lost most of his appetite. Quite understandable. Now, he's not eating any solids. He's on regular table food with us and ate "like a champ" as my husband called it. All he has now are liquids. Is this normal? His next Dr. appt is in mid Feb. Should I be worried? How do I get him back to his normal self?

Is he filling up on liquids and he doesn't have an appetite? Maybe start him off small like some cheerios and fruit.I know toddlers do have a decrease at times in their appetite, but after an illness his tummy might have shrunk.Maybe try decreasing his liquids and see if he'll start eating a little better for you.If that doesn't work maybe try getting him to see a dr and rule out any secondary infections. It's frustrating at this age some days my guys eat tons and some days I wonder how they could survive ((HUGS))

My youngest goes on a hunger strike each time he gets sick. Ultimately it isn't an issue if he is getting some nutrition and calories. Personally, I would up his milk intake to pediasure, or enriched milk, add some vitamins, try some yogurt. Chances are he is scared of throwing up again. He could still have a sore mouth. Look in there to make sure he doesn't have ulcers or odd looking spots. I would give it another week, if he is taking plenty of calories and seems okay.

As a general rule of thumb, how does he look? Is he happy? Is his color good? Are there any other issues besides no solids? If the answers to all those are positive I wouldn't freak, I would continue to push nutrition, find some softer foods and find high calorie liquids.

Thanks. I"ll try the yogurt. I've noticed he is filling up on liquids. When he sees dh with a drink at dinner, he immediately whines for one as well. I've tried limiting how much liquid he gets before meals, even still, he leaves almost all of his food. He looks ok. He still has wet and soiled diapers, which is why I am so puzzled. He does feel a lot lighter, though. I just don't want this to turn into round two. DS #1 had this no eating thing kick in right around this age. I'll update in a week, like Kaye suggested.

Thank you.
