We Started Potty Training - Now What?!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: We Started Potty Training - Now What?!
By Heaventree on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 - 04:53 pm:

Matthew went to pre-school this morning with a diaper, came home, had lunch and had a nap.

When he woke up I put on his Diego underpants and he had a chance to sit on the potty. I told him to tell me when he had to pee or poo poo so he could sit on the potty.

My neighbour just called and she suggested trying to get him to sit on the potty every 15 or 20 mins.

Mr. Matthew is grouchy and does not want to sit on his potty. I'm getting anxious, although trying not to let it show. :)

He has been up for almost an hour, has had some juice, has not peed but does not want to sit on his potty.

I am already ready to give up! Give me strength and maybe pass along a few tips please.

TIA

For the first few weeks we made Jade site every 20-30 minutes for 5 minutes and she always peed. Take in a book and read to him while he is in there. If you are using a potty chair put it in the livingroom where he can see TV and let him sit there for a few until he goes. Don't give up stay strong and it will be over soon.

AAARRRGGG! I got him to sit on the potty, after a minute he wanted to get off and then he peed on the SOFA!

I hate this, it makes me crazy.

The potty is in the livingroom in front of the t.v. I'll try to get him to sit longer next time.

I did what most parents won't agree with but I worked for us. And both my children have very healthy teeth. :)LOL

I bought Spree candy and gave Tay 2-4 little candies everytime she went Pee or Poo. It worked like a charm and she was so excited about going potty.

Good Luck, Potty Training is no fun. I am so glad we are done with that stage.

We tried the candy treats like Andi did, but Natalie just doesn't like candy! (What??!) Anyway, she really loved doing a sticker chart on the fridge. She put up a sticker on the rr track chart every time she went, and she got a raisin when she pooped on the potty. She loved getting her stickers. I think we were lucky...potty training was a serious piece of cake for her. We still can't believe it.

She was trained in a day and has been going strong ever since. Half the battle was thankfully that Natalie was just mortified when she peed/pooped on herself. We were lucky that way. She HAD to get to the potty because she couldn't stand that feeling.

Ditto Andi. Glad that's over and we only had one bad day. My friend with a son is struggling and really getting fed up. He is physically capable but simply doesn't care if he wets or poops his pants. Apparently he has bigger things to worry about, much to the distress of his mother. :)She told me this morning that he had 7 accidents yesterday, all over the house, and seems to be going more than he normally would when he was wearing a diaper. UGH.
Good luck!

Andi, I'll try just about anything. Matthew has not had any candy yet so I'm not sure if that will work. He's not really motivated by that kind of thing. I'm printing out the Chucky Cheese chart right now and will try with stickers, but I'm not really hopeful with that either.

We are 0 for 2, once on the sofa and once on the carpet. The good news is hopefully this will be done before we move into our new house which is 90% wall to wall carpet.

0 for 3, while I was cleaning up salt that Matthew dumped all over the sofa he peed all over himself again.

I give up. :(

I potty trained both of my children in 3 days. I stayed in for all three of the days and they ran around naked the whole time. For my children underwear seemed to feel like the same thing as a diaper so off everything went. Goodluck, time flies....my youngest is 7..what I would give to potty train again. :)

Gummi bears worked well, for my kids!

We stayed in the entire week, even though Natalie didn't have an accident past day one. She went around in her panties only, played outside in her panties, everything.

Don't give up! It's going to take some time, and I always here that boys are harder.

We also called everyone we could think of those first few days when she went on the potty. She told them the big news and they made a big deal about it. (She called Daddy @ work and both sets of g'parents). She liked doing that. Since he's in school, if he has any potty-trained friends, that's another boost..."So and so goes in the big boy potty." Although the little boy I mentioned before seems to think it's really cool that Natalie goes in the big potty but still doesn't care for it himself. And he stays dry all night, can you believe that? I still can't imagine Natalie being dry at night. She went through a dry night phase but that's long over.
