Formula~Milk Transition Help Please

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Formula~Milk Transition Help Please
By Heaventree on Friday, August 11, 2006 - 02:31 pm:

Cameron has been on formula now for 3 months and all is well with that. He will be 1 year old in a few weeks and I have started transistioning him to milk. At his 4:30 bottle time I have replaced the formula with milk (6oz) and he loves it.

Problem:

He is teething and has a cold, he did not have a BM yesterday which is very unusual, he can have anywhere from 1-3 each day. So I was holding off with the prunes until this evening. I went up to check on him as he was not settling down for his afternoon nap and he had a huge BM which was very wet and runny, not the typical mucusy type when teething.

So how do I know if it is the milk that caused the diaherra or the teething?

He has been on milk for 3 days now, should I stop and go back to formula and try to reintroduce the milk once the cold has cleared up and the tooth is in?

Advice/suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

I don't know because Natalie got constipated when she started on milk, but I know they can go the other way, too. We transitioned with half formula and half milk in the bottle at every feeding for about a week before ditching the formula all together.

Does he typically have diahrea(sp?) when he's getting teeth? It's probably safest to wait on the milk until his body has settled down a bit with the tooth and the cold. Then you can tell what the problem is a little easier.

Thanks Deanna,

It's hard to say if he usually has diaherra when teething as this is only his 3rd tooth, but I guess I would have to say no it's not typical of him to have diaherra when teething.

Augh, I hate not knowing, he has his 1 year check-up and needles in a few weeks, maybe I'll hold off on the milk and talk to the doc. Although our doctor thought it was fine for Matthew to be on milk at 10 months as he totally refused formula, however he had no problems.

The BM could have something to do with the cold. When I transitioned my guys to milk they also got a cold a few days after.I did switch them back to formula until the cold cleared up.I heard mild can cause more mucous so that's why I switched back. When I put them back on milk I did the half and half for a couple of days and then went back to straight milk.((HUGS))Its hard when you have a couple of things going on at once.

Since he's not quite 1, I would say to hold off with the milk and see if it helps with the runny BM's. I would just start again next week if he's feeling better. Or else I would give him some bananas and see if that will bind him up a bit. It always worked for DD, but it doesn't seem to affect DS the same. HTH! I'm sure this will be me in a couple of months! Where has the time gone? Hamg in there!

I substituted one ounce at a time when I transitioned my kids to milk. For example: 1 oz. of milk with 7 oz. of formula. for a couple of days and then would increase the milk to 2 oz and so forth.

It's hard to say what the diarrhea could be from. In the heat of the summer, sometimes my oldest dd would have a runny diaper. It's amazing how as mothers we have to be like Perry Manson to figure out stuff. lol good luck!

Yeah I guess I should try a slower transition, the one ounce at a time seems like a good idea. I'll wait until after his appointment.

Thanks everyone.
