Lethargic Toddler

Ever since I got back from Iowa, Connor has been acting strange. (We got back a week ago.)
He acts more tired and his eyelids are a bit red, which is usually an indication of naptime. He just wanted to be held this morning and wouldn't let me go for a half hour straight. I laid down on the couch with him and suggested we go outside or read another book but he just shook his head "no". It's really odd for him not to want to go outside.
He doesn't have a fever and somehow Teletubbies made him feel better.
Do I have a moody child or do you think something physical is going on? He is also teething quite a bit and taking naps 2 hours earlier than usual. (11am to 2pm now, as opposed to 1pm-4pm)
He had 3 crying fits between 7am-9:30am. He just seems so oversensitive. We read a book this morning that had a sad faced toddler in it and he just started to cry like the kids in th picture. Can he feel empathy like that?
I just want to ease his pain...thanks for letting me ramble.

Follow your mommy instincts. My DD acted similarly when she was in preschool. She didn't really seem sick, but was not her normal self and had a low grade fever that came and went. We had found 4 embedded ticks on her that year so I feared of Lyme Disease. Our ped. did bloodwork and it turned out she had Epstein Barr Virus, which is a form of mono. It's fairly common, and because it's viral there is no treatment. Knowing what it was made me feel better. Especially learning that it wasn't Lyme Disease.

Teething could easily cause this, but as Trina says, your gut tells you things all the time that we need to listen to.

Did you try Motrin or Tylenol for teething pain and see if that helped with his spirit? You know how you feel when your mouth or head hurts.

I was thinking EB as well. Trust your instincts. I think a trip to your Ped. might be worthwhile.

I'm sorry Connor is having a hard time, Heidi. Lara is much the same somedays. For her, it is often something physical going on. Lately we've been struggling with constipation problems. I'm happy to say it has been better, but while it was going on she behaved much like you describe Connor. I think you may be right to suspect the teething.
I hope he's feeling better soon.

I'm going to try him on a Dairy/Gluten free diet and see if that changes anything. He's not so much tired as he is moody too. It's hard because he's a first child and I don't have much to compare to.

I think a trip to the doctor to rule out a physical cause is a good idea. You could also talk to the doctor about changing his diet and any other concerns you have.
I'm not familiar with dairy/gluten allergies, but wouldn't there have been symptoms before this? Or have you been concerned about this for a while? Whatever it is, I hope he starts feeling better.

How long ago did you get back from Iowa? Where you visiting family?
After just a weekend at their Aunt and Uncle's house with all the extra attention and holding and cuddling, my kids wouldbe crabby when we came home because then it was just me and them again (while dh was at work at least) They got used to all that attention so fast.

Plus the teething will of course add to the pain.

Just a thought. But of course, like the other ladies said, if you feel something is wrong, it doesnt hurt to take him to the Dr.
