Need HELP....diaper rash that hurts baddly....

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Need HELP....diaper rash that hurts baddly....
By Dana on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 03:26 pm:

DS has tummy bug now w/ diareaha (sp?). His bottoms is blood red and and he can't sit. He cries and body shakes and he climbs into my arms. I know airing him out is good, but can't w/ the nothing but water poops. My mom suggested baking soda bath which we did, but he still is burning.

I've used the standard Desitin and A&D. Even tried monostat. It is a new rash so no broken skin or anything, just red and inflamed. Poor little guy. We were up all night long w/ the vomitting non stop and now his sore bottom. :(

By Cocoabutter on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 03:43 pm:

Well, if Destitin and A&D don't work, just try Vaseline Petroleum Jelly.

The most important thing is to maintain a barrier between his skin and the poop. Vaseline does that.

I hope he gets better soon, poor guy :(

I have always used Milk of Magnesia (cools the burn) & Corn Starch. The last diaper rash my dd had the doctor told me to use Calmoseptine & it worked wonders.
Hers was so bad that it looked almost purple. She was put on Augmentin(sp) for an ear infection & that is what caused the diarrhea. It doesn't seem to matter how diligently you change the diaper that acidy bm just aggravates the skin & she had one at night while sleeping.
I hope that he gets to feeling better. I think he maybe a little young, but you may ask your ped if he can have acidophilus to help with the diarrhea. It helps put the "good" bacteria back into your system, dd's ped also had us use that.

My DD had that happen a long time ago and Caldecene (?on spelling) Cream did real well and they even have a powder too. I don't know the name but there is a spray that you can use and it is cooling as well. (maybe call the pharmacy?)

Emily, my DD's rash happened while on Augmentin too. Nasty stuff.

Dana, I hope your son feels better soon. Let us know how he is doing.

By Dana on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 05:24 pm:

I have MOM. I'll give that a try. I've never heard of Caldecene. I'll let you know what happens.

By Emily7 on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 05:34 pm:

Just mix it with the cornstarch so that it make a paste.

I swear by something called "corona". It is a bright yellow tube you get from pet smart :) It is a lanolin based cream with an antiseptic, one treatment cleared it up fast. Our doc reccommended it with our first in the same situation. We laughed about the label...but oh well, whatever works!

If it's a yeast rash you're going to need an antifungal cream and then a barrier cream. When this happened to my DS 2 months ago the skin almost looked a little raw.I put on clotrimaderm cr. and then Vaseline at every change. If he gets juice I'd stop it b/c it could burn the bum abit.Good Luck.

He's still hurting and looking bad. Tried the MOM, but he started screaming a few moments after I put it on, so I don't think it was helpful. I took him to a soda bath again and he sat for only a second and stood the rest of the time, so I just kept cupping the water and letting it run down his bottom. Then I just let him run around naked for a few minutes til completely dry before diapering again.

Started giving him solids later today, so hopefully that will help. It has had just rice and baby cereal so far. No juice AT ALL. Water and had pediolyte earlier until I ran out of the little bit I had. Tomorrow I will let him drink milk. He seems so hungry and thirsty (but can't due to illness). Oh how I hate this part of having a baby in the house. You just hate to see them suffer. :(

Good nite ladies and thank you for all your advice.

Most of the time when my kids got a bad diaper rash, it was yeast-related and when I got an antifungal cream from the doctor, that is what really cleared them up.

By Marcia on Sunday, April 16, 2006 - 12:33 am:

I used antifungals, too. I used monistat mixed with a cortate cream. I also gave oral acidophilus, and if it was bad enough I gave it rectally. It never took more than a day or 2 to clear up.

I just read up and saw that Emily suggested calmoseptine. That stuff is amazing!! It creates a barrier that nothing can get through, and it doesn't easily come off. I have used it for bums, g-tube sites, chaffing, etc.

There is something called Boudreaux's Butt Paste - yes, it's for real. Many people swear by it.

By Dana on Sunday, April 16, 2006 - 10:03 am:

Looking better this morning! He is still very red and blistered in areas, but not every where any more. I think eating his solids is what has helped. He ate a full bowl of baby cereal this AM along with a sippy of milk. Lots of gas, but no wet poop. Yeah! He still shook and fought the diaper change, but he was not climbing onto me, so that is great improvement. My DD never went thru such bad rashes, so it is all new to me. I swear this baby is a 100% turn-around from my first, LOL.

Thanks again for all the help.

By Kiki on Sunday, April 16, 2006 - 12:37 pm:

Butt paste and triple paste work wonders here and believe me we have had diarrhea from hell at times. lol

By Sandysmom on Sunday, April 16, 2006 - 05:55 pm:

Dana, I'm glad he is getting better. It is such a horrible thing for any baby to go through.

I have another suggestion too. I had a little boy I was taking care of for a while who had a bad rash. In addition to cream, when I changed him, I did not use baby wipes. I used warm Viva paper towels.(just warm water, no soap) They are sooo soft and not irritating to the skin at all. That in itself cut down on a lot of discomfort during a diaper change.
