Excessive sleeping

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Excessive sleeping
By Insaneusmcwife on Monday, March 27, 2006 - 05:57 am:

For the last week dd has not done much of anything except sleep. If we wake her up she will cooperate but would rather be sleeping. We took her to the movies and she stayed awake for 2 movies straight but that is the longest she has stayed awake at once in a week. When she is awake she will torment her brother, play with the cat, etc. Just like normal. But I am worried that she is sleeping way to much. Could this be a growth spurt or should I make her an appointment so see the doctor?

By Vicki on Monday, March 27, 2006 - 07:43 am:

Does she have any other symptoms at all? The only thought that comes to mind is mono. I would start writing down exactly what hours/time she is sleeping and how she is acting when she is awake. If this continues more than a few more days and this is COMPLETELY out of character for her, I would put a call into the Dr and talk to them about it. I would think they could tell you over the phone if they thought there was something to it and if she needed to be seen or not.

Just a suggestion, take her to the Dr.. Alot of people in my family, including me have an underactive thyroid. An underactive thyroid can make someone sluggish and sleepy. (believe me, I know!) If you should ask the Dr. about this, and he sends her for blood tests, make sure he asks for ALL the tests required to determine an underactive thyroid because a lot of people have been misdiagnosed because Drs have only asked for the two most popular blood tests. Please keep us updated on this.
(also, look up on the internet about underactive thyroid in children. They may have a list of symptoms.)

HOw old is your dd? I clicked your profile and I think it says 4? If a 4 year old is only up for 4 hours at a time max, then I would have to say yes there is an issue. The average schedule for a 4 year old, up at 7ish, down for a nap after lunch, maybe noon, then up by 2 or 3 and then bedtime at closer to 7 or 8. Make a journal and take her in. It couldn't hurt.

By Insaneusmcwife on Monday, March 27, 2006 - 08:28 am:

She is only 4. Its only been for about a week that all she wants to do is sleep. Her appetite hasn't been all that great either. She has been up for about 30 min right now and is playing a game on the computer. I'm going to put a call into the doctors office this morning to see what they think. I'm in the middle of trying to change our PCM because of the ever so wonderful service we recieve at the clinic we are at now. Hopefully I will be able to get an appointment at one of the overflow places. I'll let you know.

I think you are doing the right thing. I hope all is well with her.

By Insaneusmcwife on Monday, March 27, 2006 - 09:01 am:

It was no surprise that the next available appointment isn't until April 24. I'm waiting on the nurse to call me back. Hopefully she can get me in to one of the overflow clinics, if not I will be going to urgent care tonight :(. I just hate taking her there because whatever isn't wrong with her when we get there is when we leave. They cram everyone waiting to be seen in a tiny room where everyone is coughing and breathing all over everyone :( ugh!!!

My DD had similar symptoms at the same age. She had a low grade fever off and on, loss of appetite, slept more than usual and just wasn't herself. I took her to see our ped. and he ordered bloodwork. Turned out she had Epstein Barr, which is a form of Mono. It's viral, so there are no meds. for treatment. We just had to wait it out. I asked if I should keep her out of preschool and he said, "No, it could take weeks, possibly months for it to clear up. It is contagious, but fairly common and you can't keep her out of school for that long."

After 3 hrs of fighting with the clinic I finally got her in to see the doc. He wrote her a script for chewable singular and some cough meds. She of course acted just fine while we were in there and as soon as we got out to the car she zonked out again. Poor kid.

Thank you for all your help

Sinulair is for treating asthma and allergies, and only works for 40% of patients who take it. (My DD took it for a week after being diagnosed with asthma and it did nothing.) Does your DD have asthma or allergies? Did the doctor order bloodwork?

By Vicki on Monday, March 27, 2006 - 07:26 pm:

Huh?? Why on earth did he give her that for being tired?? I am lost!!

By Reds9298 on Monday, March 27, 2006 - 08:50 pm:

Ditto Trina and Vicki. I think you should take it a step further to be safe. I can't imagine what allergy/asthma meds have to do with fatigue and loss of appetite.

By Insaneusmcwife on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 - 11:04 am:

I don't know. She was given an inhaeler at 2 months and I never gave it to her because I couldn't see her using it at 2 months and I had to fight for the liquid. Now they are saying its allergies. He said that she is sleeping because she is not feeling well. Same with her eating. She has been on it for 3 doses now and is back to her self but I don't know if its the meds or not. No they did not do any bloodwork. I really hate this clinic. I'm waiting for an opening at another clinc so we can switch.

By Trina~moderator on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 - 11:34 am:

A 2 mos. old can't possibly use an inhaler. They should have given you a nebulizer with an infant face mask and liquid albuterol solution. Did they diagnose her with allergies/asthma at that time? I'm not a doctor, but it doesn't seem like they know what they're doing, judging by my experiences with my DK's asthma and allergies, etc.. I would insist on bloodwork. Good luck, and I hope your DD is better soon!

By Insaneusmcwife on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 - 01:01 pm:

That was my argument at the time as well. The just wanted me to spray it into her mouth and I wouldn't do it. These Navy Doc are crazy!!!!! The kids have another appointment tomorrow afternoon. I hope they get a different doctor.

By Insaneusmcwife on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 - 01:12 pm:

The doc I went to after they gave me the inhaeler for her told me "her lungs sound crappy!" My response was "oh, and thats a medical term????". and then in the same visit informed me that I should have her tested for down syndrome. I've been put throught the ringer with these so called doctors. Oh the things I could tell you.
Someone once told me that a great deal of our military doctors are only military doctors because they couldn't make it in the "real" world. Sometimes I wonder how true that really is.

Blake wasnt feeling well a couple of weeks ago and he pretty much slept all day and night for 3 days. Then after that he would lay down on couch in the afternoon and take a nap. This is a child who does not EVER nap. So I knew he was sick. He had a low grade fever that would come and go. IT was wierd because after a few days the fever went away and he started feeling better??? IS there something like this going around? He just had a little congestion during this.

I hope your little one feels better soon! I didnt read all the posts- but wanted to say I had to laugh about the dotor stories!!! OMG I cant imagine. I would have to say funny things back to them like you- 'uuhhh so they teach that in med school do they?' LOL

By Reds9298 on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 - 02:39 pm:

Oh the doctors do sound a little quacky. I know how that feels so I'm sorry you have to experience that! I hope that she is feeling better soon and you can get into someone you prefer to see really soon.
