Homeschooling in Middle School ??

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Homeschooling in Middle School ??

Hi !
I KNOW someone posted on this subject a while back but I wanted to maybe check back in ....
My son has wanted to be home schooled for a LONG time .... I'm not opposed to it at all, in fact, had life been different at the time he WOULD have been homeschooled starting in 2nd grade .... but his dad was out of work, I had to start working in the office as opposed to at home (insurance reasons, etc) SO that window passed us by.
He AGAIN wants to be homeschooled .... I'm just concerned about it at this point .... I'm sure I can handle teaching him for the next couple of years .... but thinking about high school and physics and calculus ..... I took those types of classes, but it's not something I used every day, so I'm a tad concerned about my ability to teach those higher areas .....
True, that is NOT today, but I'm worried that if I take him out of traditional school now, I may never get him back in ....
SO - I wanted to look to you guys who have experience in this area .... how is middle school homeschooling working for you ?
Did any of you START homeschooling this late in the game ... if so what were the obstacles you had to overcome, how did you do that, and MOST importantly, has it been a benefit to your child, meaning, are you glad you went this route ?
Thank you for any insight you can give me!

Hi Harlena,

I was posting a few months ago when I was debating taking the leap.

It is going great homeschooling my "middle aged" child after 5 years of "regular"school. There are so many great resources and curricula available for use whenever and how ever you choose to start. Check out your local home school groups. There are probably local gym classes, field trips, meet up groups - all sorts of wonderful things to help you. There are thousands of online helps, resources - most free.

If you take the plunge will be happy to help.
Its fun!

Linda- Do you have other children who are in "regular" school still ? I am probably looking at only homeschooling my 6th grader (for 7th grade next year) I know of some other moms who are looking at it as well .....but my other two are doing well in the "regular" school .... however, I don't know how it would work with one homeschooled and two not, but I guess it depends on your purpose for doing it.
PROBABLY I will take some serious time and look at all the options out there ..... ofcourse, who has extra "serious time" these days ??? I know, we make time for what we need to do !!! We are MOMS!!!!!

Hi Harlena,
I have had children in many different types of schools but right now have only one in K-12. However more than half the homeschool parents I know have a household split between homeschool and "regular" school. If your other children are thriving in school why take them out. If not that is another story. No matter how you combine the two it will work out better than you thought for everyone.
