Molloscum Contagiosum

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Molloscum Contagiosum
By Kim on Sunday, January 29, 2006 - 08:31 pm:

Has anyone else had to deal with this? Kyle has it, its a member of the pox family and the dr said not to worry unless it spread and got worse. Well, its spread BIG TIME. I am afraid Kayla or I will get it! I don't know if I should have it removed or what. He has already had it for about a year. If anyone has any info I would greatly appreciate it.

I did a bit of googling, and found a couple of pages that you might want to read:

http://menshealth.about.com/od/conditions/a/molloscum.htm

http://www.stanford.edu/group/virus/pox/2000/molluscum_contagiosum.html

It appears that it is contagious by contact with clothing, towels, etc., so extreme care with clothes, towels, sheets, and maybe washing his things separately is a good idea. There doesn't seem to be much in the line of treatment except don't scratch, use topical antibiotic on any blisters that are opened or sore.

Has he been seen by a dermatologist? If it has been around that long, and is spreading, I would think that would be a really good idea.

Kim, I think I'd get him back to the Dr. before it gets worse. From what I just read, it can spread from skin to skin contact, shared towels, clothing, etc. Why not give your doc a call tomorrow?

By Kim on Sunday, January 29, 2006 - 08:52 pm:

It started on his leg and spread to his groin. We think he got it at his friends pool. The groin area is now terrible. I read the removal options. Kyle knows what they are too and he is scared to death. I think he is scratching in his sleep. UUUGH.

By Kim on Sunday, January 29, 2006 - 08:54 pm:

Oh and Ginny, he can't go to a derm. His father refuses to get him proper health care. Kayla needs an allergist AND a derm!

My dr is great. He know what it was just by looking at it the first time. He is my doc too. I trust him.

By Marcia on Monday, January 30, 2006 - 12:01 am:

I've never heard of this, so I did a google image search. Chrissy has what looks exactly like that on one upper, inner thigh. It's right below her diaper line, and has been there at least since last summer. It started as one, and the doc told me it was a wart. I treated it with the bandaids for warts (can't think of the name), and it did make it change a bit. Still, it never went away, and now she has a few. I'll have to show the doc again, to see what she thinks.

By Kim on Monday, January 30, 2006 - 07:15 am:

Marcia, Kyle's started as one also. He thought it was a pimple and popped it. That's when it spread. He is at a funny age, almost 12 and has to change for P.E. It makes him really self conscious!

The same friend with the pool has a hot tub.

Kim, no need to say what I think about the jerk.

Have you looked into the federally funded program for children's health insurance? In Florida, it's at

http://www.floridakidcare.org/

And, here's another link for the Children's Defense Fund in Florida, which may be able to offer useful advice and help.

http://www.childrensdefense.org/childhealth/chip/signthemup/states/florida.aspx

Seems to me that the most important thing is to get proper health care for both kids, and either of these sites might - might - be able to help.

By Kim on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 - 07:08 pm:

Thanks, Ginny. They have Medicaid. they don'y have a doctor here for allergies or derm on the one they are on. The closest provider is 5 hours away!

The DR gave Kyle a different med and we go back in a month. I guess he will assess then what needs to be done. Kayla has an ear infection. She complains so much to try and get out of school that I don't always believe her! Now I feel bad...I wish Kyle's problem would go away.

By Kernkate on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 - 12:43 pm:

{{{Kim}}} So sorry you are going through this. I really don't know your situation with Kyle's father, but I would do what ever I had to , to get him help for this condition. Its hard with the insurance I know.

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 - 12:55 pm:

(((Kim))) I've never heard of it, but it doesn't sound fun! It sucks about his dad not providing proper insurance, if it weren't for DH's Tricare my kids would be on Medicaid too, their father doesn't provide what he's supposed to. Anyway, I hope everyone is feeling better soon! Maybe you could bandage it at night so he can't scratch in his sleep?

By Kim on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 - 03:05 pm:

Thanks Kathy and Crystal. Believe me, I am trying to do what I have to do to get anything from him. He is somewhere between $20,000 and $30,000 behind on child support. No, no error in the number of zeros. And that's back support owed on my (step)daughter also because I have raised her! As I did my (step)son too, but he left with his dad. I could get carried away here so I will stop.....

LOL, Crystal, the worst part is in his groin area! I don't think we can bandage that! What the dr gave him yesterday is already calming it down a bit, so maybe that will control enough until it goes away. The funny thing is they say this is VERY COMMON in children. I have never heard of it until now!

Anyway, thanks for the hugs ladies!

Doesn't Florida have a deadbeat parent law? I know in TX, if you are behind and get pulled over you go right to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Have you considered a private recovery agent? I'd be FUMING, as I'm sure you are. :(

By Annie2 on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 - 07:00 pm:

Kim, my ds had mc since he was a toddler. However he hasn't had a spot in about a year. It is something kids can grow out of. He got his because of the chicken pox vaccine. It is a strain of the pox. He would get a light colored bump, it would last for months, not itch or anything, then all of a sudden it would come to a head, like an ant bite or a pimple. It would pop, then go away, leaving no scar.
However, he did not have them bad, only about ten or so bumps at a time, spread around his torso and top of legs. But they were constant.
We found the diagnosis by accident. An er dr. saw them, called them what they were and I did some research. They do spread from contact to contact when they come to a head.
A dermatologist can freeze them off if they are a huge problem. Single ones usually left alone to go away by themselves.

By Marcia on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 - 11:08 pm:

What did the doctor give you?

By Kim on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 07:52 am:

Sorry Marcia, for the raw area he told us to use Goldbond medicated powder! You can buy it over the counter.

Crystal, yes, there are all kinds of laws in Florida. I have been drug through the Florida system for four long years. I don't have the money for anything private. When he originally assaulted me in January of 2002 he didn't even go to jail. I had to ask someone in MAY why he hadn't been to jail. They then put him in jail for it! There is a major flaw in the system here. IT IS DISGUSTING! I have written to my judge (and my judge even forwarded my mail to the Gov's office), to the Governor, to different state offices. I could write a book. One entity doesn't share info about any others. I have had to pry and research on my own. Its totally disgusting and I can see how lot of women and children get left behind. As I said, I could go on and on here.....I was also supposed to get displaced homemaker help to find and polish my job skills so I could get a job that would support us. NEVER HAPPENED. So I am in childcare, which pays very low wages, especially for four people. Which is why I need state help. Which all goes back to their father being a big huge •••. I don't know how I make it sometimes....

sorry for the vent!

Thanks, Annie. I wonder if it is a regional thing. OOOHHHHHHH I do not think he would like the ones in his groin area frozen off.....that is what he is afraid of. They can be scraped off too. I hope it doesn't bother him for life. I wonder why it doesn't hurt like shingles. He and Kayla had chicken pox really really bad. They didn't get the vaccine. It was only suggested at the time, not mandatory.

Thanks all for the info.

Kim, email me please? cjaping at gmail dot com

By Marcia on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 10:35 am:

Chrissy's aren't raw at all. Are they raw because he scratches them? She is unable to do so, so maybe that's the difference??

By Kernkate on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 02:19 pm:

Kim you sure do have you hands full! Does he work somewhere that they could take the child support right out of his pay? I know that do that here in PA. How is your DS feeling now?

By Kim on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 03:02 pm:

Kathy, he is an ironworker. But he changes jobs constantly, or companies I mean. I truly could write a book! They take out one or two times, 95 dollars, and then it stops. Its not even the right amount.

Yes, Marcia, that has to be the difference because his did not spread or get raw until he started scratching.

Crystal, I will email you soon.

By Ginny~moderator on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 05:49 pm:

Kim, is he a union member? Could the child support people track him through the union? They ought to be able to get a subpoena.

By Kim on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 08:30 pm:

I believe he was kicked out of the union. Something about a drug test.....the man that would never even take an aspirin.....
